I'm a huge Gremlins fan. Saw both films when I was a kid. I actually prefer 2, because the FX in it are truly amazing; the Gremlins look so much more real than in the 1st one.

Love them both 100%. Both achieved different things, being different style movies:

GREMLiNS is often quite dark, though it has funny moments too. Both types of moments are strange in the best way. It tells a story with a lot of wonderful atmosphere, including the Jerry Goldsmith score for it. I love his entire score, and the songs on there that aren't by him are great too. Gizmo is adorable, and Stripe is a great villain. And along with all of this, the film has something to say; the man who originally owns Gizmo (not yet named Mr. Wing) is the man who says the key line regarding this.

GREMLiNS 2 is often goofing on the first film, (among other things) and it's a lot of fun! Director Joe Dante was told he could do whatever he wanted, so it's all over the place, yet still has social commentary (such as how technology isn't always great, for one thing). Though storytelling doesn't seem to be the main goal, the film doesn't suffer from that at all.

Both films were made at just the right time to capture the magic they did. If I had to choose, I'd go with the first, but that's not a knock at the second film at all, because it's just as fantastic in it's own way.

The one thing I'll never understand about Gremlins 2 is...
When I saw it at the movies and on subsequent TV airings, the part where the gremlins cut off the movie during the lab sequence, we then see them taking over a high class cinema where a snooty consierge goes into the seats and next thing we know Hulk Hogan's talking smack to get the movie back on course.

But when I rented the movie from a Blockbuster or similar store once, that entire sequence was replaced with the gremlins in first a Western ghosttown setting and then in a gangster movie being gunned down by Dirty Harry on a rooftop before returning to the movie proper.

*Shrugs. Loved Gremlins 2, Greta and Bat-Gremlin were my faves, and my mom and I stuck through the credits for all of Daffy Duck's subtle jabs.

They must have done that so it would make more sense to video owners (though I think it's shown on TV airings, too). However, the original scene is on DVD.

The novelization also changes the scene in which one of the Gremlins locks the author in a room and takes over the story the way Gremlins know how.

One fan even made an alternate scene for DVD, using replicas of the puppets and everything! Now that's impressive!

That was the version of the Gremlin takeover that they did specifically for the video release, where the Gremlins break your VCR and take over your TV. Though it wasn't Dirty Harry they were gunned down by, it was John Wayne.
