Gordon appreciation thread

Yes, Princeton's appreciation threads are back (hey, give me a break, they take time to brew up  )! Now, there's been at least a couple threads regarding favorite SS humans. Well, without a doubt, mine is Gordon. Now, I didn't have the opportunity of seeing Matt Robinson or Hal... well, whatever his last name is. So, the best I can do is comment on SS's current Gordon, Roscoe Orman. I can't quite explain what it is about Gordon I love. Maybe it's his neat mustache, maybe it's his "chrome dome":smile:grouchy: ), maybe it's all of him! My favorite Gordon memory regards a scene from (brace yourselves)... Elmo In Grouchland.:embarrassed: ***dodges rotten tomatoes*** Anyway, when Big Bird goes down the trash can to help Elmo, Gordon helps push him down. Well, the look of frustration and determination on Gordon's face helped to shed light on an otherwise unforgettable movie. So, let's hear it for Gordon!

Here's a piece of trivia:

When ROSCOE ORMAN auditioned for the role of Gordon in 1974, he beat out Robert Guillaume, who went on to play Benson in "Soap" and "Benson."

Reason? Orman states: "Guillaume didn't have that 'Gordon thing.'"

To me some of the greatest and most memorable Gordan moments (atleast while played by Orman) have been in Follow That Bird and Christmas Eve On Sesame Street. These films really showed who his character was and his role in the community and as teacher and father figure to Big Bird. It's true what the Sesame Street Unpaved book says. He is the one you would go to if you were really in trouble. The other humans were great, but Gordon was the protector. He made you feel safe and you could always trust him in time of danger. I would trust Gordon with my life.

You reminded me of a question I had, jeffkjoe: "Benson" is a spinoff of "Soap", but I thought "Soap" had another spinoff. Anyone recall what it was, if there even was one?

Even though there were 2 other Gordons before Roscoe Orman. I'd have to say Roscoe is the best. He has that sincere, and honest way with The Muppets. I can think of a lot of great Gordon moments.

In the episode where Mr. Hooper died. He seemed to be the one who did the most explaining to Big Bird. He was very sincere and explained Mr. Hooper's death to him the best way he possibly could.

In 1985 he had went to Snuffy's cave for a sleepover. (One of Snuffy's first visible episodes) He seemed overwelmed by all the Big stuff. Like the big Silverware they used to eat with, the Big Telephone, Snuffy's Big toys. But never complained and went along with everything and tried his best to be a good friend to Snuffy.

The episode where he took Elmo and Miles to the zoo from 1987 also showed Gordon's compasionate side.

In 1989 Him, Susan and Miles were supposed to go on Vacation, but their car wouldn't start, and the auto repair shop was closed for the weekend. Gordon started to get bummed out that he couldn't take his family on vacation (Grungetta and Oscar loved this) But then he realized that he could get the car fixed after the weekend and go on vacation. And he decided to take the Picnic Basket they packed for the trip and take it to the park.

I remember in the 30th Season Big Bird and Snuffy kept calling him to the window, and he never got annoyed. This was somewhat of a milestone episode because it was the last time they showed the original Rubber Ducky with the blue background. Later that Season, it was updated.

I appreciate Gordon. Even if he is busy with something, he is always there to help. And he is always helping out the kids in the neighborhood, too.

Gordon to me was always the Father type figure on Sesame Street (next to Mr. Hooper) and I'm glad to see he's still around on the show. I really want to commend Mr. Orman for all that time he put into the Gordon character and I admire the effort he still puts into his role.

Gordon definitely fills very much of a father figure role on Sesame Street and I can see how he's filled that role especially toward Big Bird. Really of course I love all the Sesame Street humans- but Gordon definitely seems to be one of the most understanding and caring ones- and usually doesn't get angry easily, as he patiently deals with the Muppets!
Yes- I definitely appreciate and admire Gordon!

I have to agree there. Especially, in the scene from FTB when he told Big Bird to jump off the truck.

Big Bird was concerned since he was told never to jump off a moving vehicle. But Gordon convinced him too do it. If not, he'd still be in the sleaze brother's cage as we speak.

I remember an episode I saw years ago, where Gordon sings a song about how he was afraid of the dark as a child, that even adults can be scared. That had an impact on me at the time.
