reticulated foam Is really expensive! if u cover just regular polyfoam with fleece or other material It will last quite a bit longer with no sun or heat damage . So I'm not sure the reticulated foam is the way to go.... unless you making a puppet for a film shoot .

About the patterns being to expensive, there worth every penny and more , And that's the truth!!! so save up or borrow to get them It will be well worth it !

I just wish the patterns weren't so expensive. I definitely can't afford to get the pattern and the covering pattern right now. I still need to find alocal place to get reticulaated foam too. I don't want to order online or over the phone.

Don't wait to get started even if you have to rip up your mother's couch to get foam. It's true that the project puppet patterns are super and the play soup video is killer, but there is a wealth of information here, and it's free.

In a recent thread, there's links to a free head pattern, Buck has his Tumbles tutorial, somewhere here (I couldn't find it quickly) there is a link to a step-by-step tutorial on somebody building either an ArmsLength kit or something similar, Puppet101 at swazzle and there are links to works in progress that show enough detail to spark some creativity and teach you to glue foam. (The amount of information that is here now, compared to 3 years ago is mind-blowing.)

Shoot, take a lump of Play-Doh, shape it, cover it in masking tape and carefully cut it in half. Start cutting the "high spots" until you can get it to lie flat or semi-flat. BOOM, instant pattern. Crude, but it teaches you how foam works. SHAPE, TAPE, MAPE...I mean MAKE.

Poly-foam is cheap and usually available locally through fabric stores or upholstery shops. You can work up to reticulated. (I only use reticulated on "special projects" at this point.)

The point of my tirade is don't make excuses for what is holding you back. Find solutions by asking what you can do now. (Everyone should read QBQ. I reviewed it on my blog a few months ago. Great book.)
