Chapter Seven
"RED!!" Gobo managed to yell out, as he dipped back beneath the level of the water, and he started to swim faster; propelling himself underneath the water; edging closer to Red's motionless form. He thought she was motionless until he got closer, seeing that she was feebly struggling beneath the whipping currents.
He pulled her up, breaking the waters surface, and they continued to drift on the near-roaring waters down to the Great Hall, where the water slowed to a mere trickle. Picking her up, he ran to the healer's cavern; hoping against all hope that she would be okay. She was breathing, but she wasn't consious. Rushing through the now soaked caverns, everyone was wanting to stop him, to ask him what had happened, but seeing the unconsious Red in his arms made them stop whatever thoughts they had to ask him.
'Gotta go faster....gotta get to her to the healer's....I can't let her leave me...." He looked down at Red, and tears started to form at his eyes. 'I wish she had never followed me!!!' His thoughts screamed out, angrily.
The fraggles were getting worried about the rising water within the caverns, it hadn't stopped yet. The Great Hall, the highest point of the caverns; was still covered in a thin layer of water. Many if not all of Fraggles were in the Great Hall, hoping against all hope it would reside and would be better soon...
"Oohh....what-what happened??" Doc sat up again, leaning against the workbench, holding his head. He heard a shrill ringing, wondering if the fire alarm was going off. He soon realized it was coming from his own head.
"We both got clocked by the exploding pipes, Doc Christian. I'm trying my best to fix the problem now..." The plumber was fixing on trying to ebb the flow of water that was still rushing into the floor from below them. It was surging powerfully. "Luckily, that hole in the wall, is diverting most of the water away from the workshop...but next time something happens with your plumbing...call me! Don't try to fix it yourself!"
Doc nodded, then got rewarded with a sharp pain in his head, and he instead just gave the plumber a thumbs up, as he tried to stand up again. Luckily the room stopped spinning after a few moments, and he was able to stay standing without falling. He walked over to the hole, and looked down into it for a moment; he thought he was hearing faint yelling and shouting. But he dismissed it as nothing and continued to watch the plumber continue his long and ardous task at fixing his mistake.
"HEALER!!" Gobo yelled, into the seemingly empty cavern hole, where she was supposed to live. He was already crying hard, and his voice was choked by his sobs. "H-Healer!! Please....please I need some help!!" He looked around, and he wiped his eyes quickly, looking around once more.
An older female fraggle with red and purple dreaded hair poked her head from around a corner, and began to hurry towards the cavern's entrence where Gobo stood.
"Oh you poor children!" She said, worringly as she gently took Red from his arms. Her gentle, grandmotherly tone seemed to sooth Gobo a tiny bit. "What has happened to her?"
Gobo coughed a few times, slicking his hair away from his face; he merely was quiet for a moment, looking at Red's seemingly-lifeless form in the older fraggle's arms.
"The...the water. We....we were trying to figure out why we weren't getting water, and suddenly the pipes burst around us, sending us reeling through the caverns....she....she hit one of the pipes and fell below the water's surface...."
The healer nodded gently, laying Red on her bed, starting to dry her off. She peeled off Red's soggy sweater, and softly pulled her hair away from her face. A small smile crossed the healer's features, and she looked over at Gobo.
"She'll be okay, Gobo. She needs to get dried off, and get some warm fluids into her." As the healer said this, as if almost on cue, Red started up from the bed, her eyes showing her wild fear. The healer gently pressed Red against the bed, shaking her head. "Don't move, sweetie. You're okay. Your friend brought you here. You'll be okay..."
Red stared at the older female, and she leaned over the other side of the bed, and started to cough hard, water trickling from her mouth. Leaning back on the bed, she looked over at Gobo and smiled.
"T-Thank you..." She croaked out, putting her hand in Gobo's. "...for everything, Gobo..." She whispered, then she closed her eyes, as if to go to sleep. Gobo smiled through his tears and left the room, to allow her to sleep.
He had to find out what he could do to help his friends, and correct what had happened to them all.
"John?" Marla pondered, as she looked at him from across the room. He was sitting on his bed, holding a small bag in his hands. He was dressed in his usual preacher's outfit, his black hair slicked back, as he was still somewhat wet.
"Go help the others, Marla." He frowned, as he continued to pack his small bag.
"John, what are you doing?" She stared at the back of his head, as he was moving about the room, gathering his stuff to pack.
He could feel her steely gaze boring into his head. Like twin lasers almost, wanting to tear away his flesh, he thought. Turning around to face that formidable fragglette Marla, he sighed.
But she wasn't angry. She looked as if she was going to cry. Because he was leaving them...she was sad.
"John! Why are you doing this?" Marla exclaimed, as she moved closer to him. Darla and Carla were standing in the doorway watching them. Carla had a hanky in her hands, and Darla was already crying.
"They're going to roast me alive for what I've caused. I can't let them do this to us!" He retorted, getting more angry at himself, then at them.
"To us? They're going to roast you, you....you shoddy fraggle!!" Carla burst out in anger at him, her frown deepening by the second. "You just don't want to get in trouble, so you're going to fly off like you always do!!"
Darla burst out in uncontrollable sobbing now, sliding down the edge of the carved rock doorway, to sit on the floor. Marla was whispering to herself, wishing she could turn back the time and extengish the thought that brought them there to this point before it ever happened.
"Fragglettes....girls....I have to do what I have to do. If you come with me, they'll get you too." Lowering his head, he closed his eyes for a moment, frowning. "I never wanted to drag you down like this."
"Well you did, Convincing John! And what are you going to do now, huh?" Carla continued in her tirade, still seething with anger. "You just gonna convince them it wasn't your fault?" With a dersive laugh, she stared pointedly at John.
"You going to convince them it was Gobo Fraggle?" She laughed again, in spite, and turned to leave the room; stepping over Darla's shaking form.
Convincing John stood in the room, his bag still in his hands.
Marla was staring at the doorway where Carla was only moments before. Darla was watching John, still sniffling into her hanky. With a short nod to himself, John had a new plan in mind...
