Chapter Seven

"RED!!" Gobo managed to yell out, as he dipped back beneath the level of the water, and he started to swim faster; propelling himself underneath the water; edging closer to Red's motionless form. He thought she was motionless until he got closer, seeing that she was feebly struggling beneath the whipping currents.

He pulled her up, breaking the waters surface, and they continued to drift on the near-roaring waters down to the Great Hall, where the water slowed to a mere trickle. Picking her up, he ran to the healer's cavern; hoping against all hope that she would be okay. She was breathing, but she wasn't consious. Rushing through the now soaked caverns, everyone was wanting to stop him, to ask him what had happened, but seeing the unconsious Red in his arms made them stop whatever thoughts they had to ask him.

'Gotta go faster....gotta get to her to the healer's....I can't let her leave me...." He looked down at Red, and tears started to form at his eyes. 'I wish she had never followed me!!!' His thoughts screamed out, angrily.

The fraggles were getting worried about the rising water within the caverns, it hadn't stopped yet. The Great Hall, the highest point of the caverns; was still covered in a thin layer of water. Many if not all of Fraggles were in the Great Hall, hoping against all hope it would reside and would be better soon...

"Oohh....what-what happened??" Doc sat up again, leaning against the workbench, holding his head. He heard a shrill ringing, wondering if the fire alarm was going off. He soon realized it was coming from his own head.

"We both got clocked by the exploding pipes, Doc Christian. I'm trying my best to fix the problem now..." The plumber was fixing on trying to ebb the flow of water that was still rushing into the floor from below them. It was surging powerfully. "Luckily, that hole in the wall, is diverting most of the water away from the workshop...but next time something happens with your plumbing...call me! Don't try to fix it yourself!"

Doc nodded, then got rewarded with a sharp pain in his head, and he instead just gave the plumber a thumbs up, as he tried to stand up again. Luckily the room stopped spinning after a few moments, and he was able to stay standing without falling. He walked over to the hole, and looked down into it for a moment; he thought he was hearing faint yelling and shouting. But he dismissed it as nothing and continued to watch the plumber continue his long and ardous task at fixing his mistake.

***

"HEALER!!" Gobo yelled, into the seemingly empty cavern hole, where she was supposed to live. He was already crying hard, and his voice was choked by his sobs. "H-Healer!! Please....please I need some help!!" He looked around, and he wiped his eyes quickly, looking around once more.

An older female fraggle with red and purple dreaded hair poked her head from around a corner, and began to hurry towards the cavern's entrence where Gobo stood.

"Oh you poor children!" She said, worringly as she gently took Red from his arms. Her gentle, grandmotherly tone seemed to sooth Gobo a tiny bit. "What has happened to her?"

Gobo coughed a few times, slicking his hair away from his face; he merely was quiet for a moment, looking at Red's seemingly-lifeless form in the older fraggle's arms.

"The...the water. We....we were trying to figure out why we weren't getting water, and suddenly the pipes burst around us, sending us reeling through the caverns....she....she hit one of the pipes and fell below the water's surface...."

The healer nodded gently, laying Red on her bed, starting to dry her off. She peeled off Red's soggy sweater, and softly pulled her hair away from her face. A small smile crossed the healer's features, and she looked over at Gobo.

"She'll be okay, Gobo. She needs to get dried off, and get some warm fluids into her." As the healer said this, as if almost on cue, Red started up from the bed, her eyes showing her wild fear. The healer gently pressed Red against the bed, shaking her head. "Don't move, sweetie. You're okay. Your friend brought you here. You'll be okay..."

Red stared at the older female, and she leaned over the other side of the bed, and started to cough hard, water trickling from her mouth. Leaning back on the bed, she looked over at Gobo and smiled.

"T-Thank you..." She croaked out, putting her hand in Gobo's. "...for everything, Gobo..." She whispered, then she closed her eyes, as if to go to sleep. Gobo smiled through his tears and left the room, to allow her to sleep.

He had to find out what he could do to help his friends, and correct what had happened to them all.

***

"John?" Marla pondered, as she looked at him from across the room. He was sitting on his bed, holding a small bag in his hands. He was dressed in his usual preacher's outfit, his black hair slicked back, as he was still somewhat wet.

"Go help the others, Marla." He frowned, as he continued to pack his small bag.

"John, what are you doing?" She stared at the back of his head, as he was moving about the room, gathering his stuff to pack.

He could feel her steely gaze boring into his head. Like twin lasers almost, wanting to tear away his flesh, he thought. Turning around to face that formidable fragglette Marla, he sighed.

But she wasn't angry. She looked as if she was going to cry. Because he was leaving them...she was sad.

"John! Why are you doing this?" Marla exclaimed, as she moved closer to him. Darla and Carla were standing in the doorway watching them. Carla had a hanky in her hands, and Darla was already crying.

"They're going to roast me alive for what I've caused. I can't let them do this to us!" He retorted, getting more angry at himself, then at them.

"To us? They're going to roast you, you....you shoddy fraggle!!" Carla burst out in anger at him, her frown deepening by the second. "You just don't want to get in trouble, so you're going to fly off like you always do!!"

Darla burst out in uncontrollable sobbing now, sliding down the edge of the carved rock doorway, to sit on the floor. Marla was whispering to herself, wishing she could turn back the time and extengish the thought that brought them there to this point before it ever happened.

"Fragglettes....girls....I have to do what I have to do. If you come with me, they'll get you too." Lowering his head, he closed his eyes for a moment, frowning. "I never wanted to drag you down like this."

"Well you did, Convincing John! And what are you going to do now, huh?" Carla continued in her tirade, still seething with anger. "You just gonna convince them it wasn't your fault?" With a dersive laugh, she stared pointedly at John.

"You going to convince them it was Gobo Fraggle?" She laughed again, in spite, and turned to leave the room; stepping over Darla's shaking form.
Convincing John stood in the room, his bag still in his hands.

Marla was staring at the doorway where Carla was only moments before. Darla was watching John, still sniffling into her hanky. With a short nod to himself, John had a new plan in mind...

Oh yaey!! I hug the fact that we got an update.
The Healer Fraggle... Based somewhat on the Caretaker from Part of Me?
Doc's getting a bad ringing in his head... Wonder if he'll finally answer that and stop the ringing.
The plumber's right, he should leave the plumbing to him in the future.
Absolutely loved how Gobo's anxiously trying to rescue Red, from the watery currents raging through the caverns at first, and then from herself rushing to the Healer's cave.

And John's showing some guilt at what he's done... But Carla, you should know better than to give him any ideas.
Oooh, I'm a bit scared now. Will Gobo be made to blame for a crime he didn't commit? A Fraggle disaster caused by this most convincing creature named John?
It's so great Sara... To have a flawed Jim character be the focus of this moral dilema.

Please... Please... More soon!

Woo-hoo! Yea update! But poor Red. She's so weak, it's a side we're not used to seeing. But Gobo saved her! Yea! I love the Healer Fraggle too. I didn't know if anything like that existed when I wrote my story and therefore created the Caregiver Fraggle. Anyway, the point I was trying to make is, your description of the Healer is exactly what I pictured for my Caregiver! Exactly! That's just so neat! Anyway, John and the Fragglettes....those scheamers....

Wonderful update. Hope to see more soon!

Chapter Eight

The plumber was finally finished with his work, having hauled in a new water heater; and he had reconnected or replaced the broken pipes. Where the fraggle hole was, he had to cut away into the wall, so he could get inside and repair the broken pipes. Sighing, the man sat down on the soggy floor, and looked up at Doc who was sitting on a stool, the TV on.

"Finally, I'm done. This is going to be more then I originally thought, Doc..." He looked up at Doc, who was still watching the TV half-heartedly. "Doc Christian?"

"Huh? Oh sorry. What were you saying?" He asked, mumbling a bit so his head wouldn't start hurting again.

'Doc must be going deaf or something....either that or that pipe hit him really hard....' The plumber thought, as he stood up, and glanced at the TV. It was Sesame Street. "I said I'm done. Let me tally up what it is, and then we can figure out how you're going to pay me for the services of fixing your mistake." He said.

"Oh, right." Frowning, he turned his attention back to the TV. The mindless children's program helped to alleviate the pain in his head somewhat. He was watching the skit that was on just then, three different muppets along with a red one, who kept singing when they didn't want him too...

"....See the small ball on the tall wall, see it fall in a hall, see it crawl and give it's call 'Hi ya'll!', see it stall and wear a shawl, OH YEAH!....oh yeah...."

The plumber watched as Doc was silently mouthing the words to the old skit, a smile across his face as he did so. As he started to walk outside the door, the plumber realized that he had seen no one else around the workshop, or furthermore the large house that was beside it. Doc was softly tapping his left hand in time to the music as another skit came on the show; until he started to use that hand to steady his checkbook so he could write the plumber a check.

"How much is it?" Doc asked. Turning around a bit, he noticed the plumber staring at him. Or rather his left hand. Doc subconsiously covered his left hand with his right, and met the plumber's gaze. "How much is it?" He repeated again.

"Oh..uh...just write it for 50 or 100 bucks, whatever you can afford, Doc Christian. I'll get my boss to allow payments...and such..." The plumbers words trailed off, as his gaze traveled upwards from Doc's left hand, to his face.

"Um...thank you." Doc replied, writing the check for 150 dollars. He figured give the man as much as he could deal with now, then work out some payment deal later on. "But...why?"

"....you lost her didn't you?" The plumber's voice was small, his hand on the door; looking for all the world like he was going to leave that very moment.

Doc coughed a few times, clearing his head of those infernal cobwebs that determined to take up space lately and stared at the plumber. He merely nodded, and handed the young man his check without another word.

The plumber began to leave, closing the door behind him. As he ran the check though the scanner that was set up on his truck, he was thinking back to his own parents.

"Maybe he's just doing this tinkering to fill that void...." He mused to himself, as the check cleared. He stamped the back and slipped it into the small bank bag where he kept them. "I could keep an eye on the old man....maybe he'd like the company..."

With that thought in his mind, the plumber got into his truck and went off to his next job.

***

Gobo was pacing outside the Healer's room, getting more worried by the moment. The water had filled most of the caverns, and a spotter fraggle had come running into the great hall. He had reported that the water had finally stopped running. He had seen a silly creature dressed in white inside the front edge of the fraggle hole, patching up the pipes. Yet, Gobo continued to pace.

"Oh, Boober....shouldn't we try to help Gobo?" Mokey replied, watching Gobo pacing. "He looks very worried about poor Red.."

"Yeah, we should help him, Mokey." Wembley chimed in, a frown on his face.

Boober nodded, wringing the clothes out, and placing them on the clothesline. "At least what came through the caverns was clean water..." He muttered, hanging one of Wembley's shirts on the line next.

"Boober!" Mokey scolded, giving him a somewhat playful slap on his arm to get his attention. "What do you think we can do to help Gobo?"

The germaphobic fraggle watched as Gobo continued his same gait. Step, step, step, turn around, run hand through hair, look through the door, step, step, dig through vest pockets, step, step,...on and on, incessantly. He shook his head, and frowned.

"Let him know we're here for him." Boober said softly. He had been thinking about the same question that Mokey had asked, ever since he had heard that Red was in the Healer's cavern; while hanging up the laundry.

Mokey nodded, and she and Wembley went over to where Gobo paced, watching him for just a second more.

Step, step, dig through pockets, step, step, step, run hand through hair, step, step, run into Wembley....run into Wembley? Gobo looked up, and saw his best friend on the ground, looking up at him. Wembley could see his friends eyes were red-rimmed, as if he'd been crying for quite awhile.

"W-Wembley?" Gobo managed to stutter out, holding out a hand for him. "What are you guys doing here?"

Without a word, Mokey stepped forward, and engulfed the worried fraggle in a tight hug. She could feel he was still wet, as he hadn't even changed clothes yet or bothered to get dry. "....you're going to get cold, Gobo..." She slipped off her robe, and put it on Gobo's shoulders, wrapping it around him.

"I don't care, Mokey. Keep the robe. I'm fine." He replied, then walked over to the healer's door, and glanced inside. Red was still asleep, occasionally turning to cough some more. He knew something, that the other's didn't know.

Red's lungs had filled almost completely with water; when she had gone under. She's still hanging on, but to him, it was just barely...

"Gobo, you can't let yourself down just because this happened." Wembley protested, in a rare moment of not wembling. Which was in fact, very rare for him. "You are not fine. Go get some dry clothes, or...or we'll get them for you! Boober's got some of your extra clothes drying on the line."

Gobo shot Wembley a withering glare, then let his shoulders slump down for a moment; looking for all the rock like an older fraggle. This 'accident' that Wembley had called it, was taking a toll on the young fraggles body. He realized it, but he couldn't feel like he could fight it. He loved her, and there was seemingly nothing he could do, but wait and see. And hope.

If the healer's cavern was a hospital, the monitors would have been going crazy; heart rate off the chart, oxygen intake decreasing....but this was no hospital, merely a small set of rooms carved out of the ideginious rock, set up with a few meager comfortable beds, and one older female fraggle. Who was rushing to help all that she could. Red was gasping, choking on the fluids in her lungs; she was grabbing at her throat, not realizing what was happening. It had driven her out of a deep sleep, waking her up to her worst nightmare.

She felt she was loosing her footing...with her place, her mind, and most of all her body. She was losing the fight she thought. The healer came back with her assistant, an older male fraggle, who kept Red tight to the bed, while the healer used a small tube connected to a rockclimbers empty and cleaned bladder to get her to start breathing normally again. Her breathing regulated again, and she calmed down for a moment, but she was unable to talk. Gobo was staring at this from the doorway, all at once angry and happy.

"Wha-What did you just do to her?" He asked incredously.

As the Healer was going about fixing some tinctures and herbal mixes to help alleviate the problem, the older male fraggle looked over to where Gobo stood, and motioned for him to sit down on one of the chairs next to him.

"We intubated her. It'll help her to breathe normally until we can figure out why her lungs have closed down." He replied rather 'matter-of-factly'. He noticed that Gobo didn't seem to recoginze what he said, so he sighed and repeated it for him. "That tube in her mouth, connected to this rockclimber's bladder bag, is helping her breathe. Take a breath in and out, notice how your lungs expand and detract? Well, this is doing that for her."

"O-Oh....I understand. I've never seen anything like this before...." Gobo murmured, holding Red's hand now, to comfort her. While the other male fraggle kept a watch on keeping to compressions timed properly, the Healer came back inside the main room, carrying many different sized jars in her arms.

"That's because this isn't of our devices, young fraggle. This fraggle here, his name is House Fraggle, by the way. He isn't originally from here." She started to mark down Red's changes in a chart, and she looked over at House for a moment. "Where did you say your main fraggle hole came out from again?"

"It came out into what the silly creatures call a 'hospital'. Quite a ways away from here. I watched the silly creatures called 'doctors' for most of my life. I learned a good bit of what they know, so I decided I would go around teaching the healers in various fraggle caves what I've learned." After he spoke, he motioned to the Healer to take over squeezing the bag for a moment, so he could continue what she was doing originally. "I'm teaching how we can combine what they use, and what we use, to ensure that there are less unexplained fraggle deaths. Your friend here, she would have died within a few more minutes if Healer here didn't know what to do to help her."

Gobo could only watch, as Red laid in the bed, looking at him. By now, House had gently taped Red's mouth shut, so air wouldn't escape. Reaching over, he gave Red a gentle, heartfelt kiss on the cheek.

"We're going to make sure Convincing John gets what he deserves, Red." He murmured into her ear, holding her hand tightly. "We'll all make sure he knows exactly what he's caused."

Ooh, an intense chapter! So much going on with Doc and Red and Gobo and everyone...I feel so bad for Doc, he just seems so sad. I do like the Sesame Street sketch he was watching though, one of my favorites. Scary moments with Red and intubation. House Fraggle...any reference to House, M.D. the t.v. show? And Gobo vowing that Convincing John would get exactly what he deserved...chilling.

Great update, looking forward to more!

YES!! OMG YES!!! *squeals like a fangirl is prone to do* I adore House M.D.!! I wanted to give Healer an assistant, so I figured that would do perfectly!!! Also, I'll probably not touch on it in story, but out of the story's context, the hospital that House Fraggle came from is PPTH (Princeton-Plainboro Teaching Hospital).
