Last night, I dreamt that I saw the actual Elmo puppet (the one they use on the show) at a museum center. As soon as I saw it, I unapologetically burst into tears. It made me so emotional!
That little red monster was the reason for so many of my amazing childhood memories. Heck, he's the reason I'm still a Muppet fan to this day. From simple yet cherished memories like when my mom put my own blanket on me while I watched Elmo sing to his blanket in Elmo in Grouchland to extremely fun times like the several "Elmo birthday parties" young me threw with my friends on February 4th, I owe countless childhood memories to him.
When my dream self saw that character, he knew that he was looking at a puppet. The thing I saw before me was not a living creature, but merely a prop from a TV show. However... in my eyes, it was so much more than that. I was standing next to something that at one point my life, absolutely meant the world to me and it was beautiful. I even walked up to the Elmo puppet and said, "Thanks for the memories, old friend!" while walking away. I knew that "he" couldn't hear me back, but I still couldn't help myself.
After I woke up, that dream really made me think about the magic of Jim Henson's creations. As adult fans, we are fully aware that the Muppets aren't real. That childlike imagination that once made us believe they were real people has long since left. But when we see Kermit riding a bike on TV, we can't help but feel that sense of wonder return for a moment.
