And note that Elmo's father in "Beginnings" looks nothing like the character we've seen on SS.

There was some reasoning about that over at ToughPigs; they're from the mind of Dorothy, where everything looks like Elmo. Recent illustrations have used images of Elmo's pointy-nosed brown-haired dad (now in puppet form) and his (Elmo's) purple-haired orange mom.

And yeah, score one for getting Bill a Sesame character (the same goes for Leslie Cararra and Rickey Boyd).
