Nintendo has its head up its butt about the whole thing. I'm annoyed that they didn't even bother to translate the Mario-kun manga for the US market. I've seen worse cases of incredibly Japanese gag manga being translated awkwardly into English, so there's no excuse there.

Not so much a comic strip, but a series spread over five installments: XANADU- Across Diamond Seas. From the late 80's by a Seattle artist named Vicki Wyman. The story is long enough to be fleshed out to ninety minutes of screen time without any padding.
And who wouldn't love unicorns, gryphons AND dragons?
