If anything, I think they'd actually be praised for it, considering this was during a time where the general consensus was there was a severe lack of relatable female characters in children's media for little girls to relate to. Heck, this was one of the biggest reasons why Zoe became a major character in the 90s, and even though it was CTW's decision to make her sort of a gender-neutral character like orange, researchers felt she would've been more effective in grabbing girls' attention if she had been pink instead.
Then, of course, during the late 2000s and early New Tens, with the addition of Abby, she, Zoe, and Rosita became a prominent "girl power" trio on the street, often getting songs and sketches just for them.
