Ah yes, I remember Ruby: back when SS was trying so hard to introduce new female Muppets to appeal to little girls watching, yet they always had such a big tomboyish streak so they could also appeal to boys and show them they could play with girls without having to worry about cooties. Ruby, Roxie Marie, Merrie Monster, I suppose even Rosita to a lesser extent.

If the internet existed back then, I wonder if SS would have been under fire for “pandering” to little girls. 🤔

If anything, I think they'd actually be praised for it, considering this was during a time where the general consensus was there was a severe lack of relatable female characters in children's media for little girls to relate to. Heck, this was one of the biggest reasons why Zoe became a major character in the 90s, and even though it was CTW's decision to make her sort of a gender-neutral character like orange, researchers felt she would've been more effective in grabbing girls' attention if she had been pink instead.

Then, of course, during the late 2000s and early New Tens, with the addition of Abby, she, Zoe, and Rosita became a prominent "girl power" trio on the street, often getting songs and sketches just for them.

Just a heads up: I just got this notice from screen media ventures llc on my video upload of the opening to 536....... 12 years later:

Yeah, apparently this has to do with the Street Gang documentary. I have a very, very good feeling we’re going to start seeing more videos get blocked soon..... specifically just in the US, too. Ugh.
