Was Once Ernie, everything you've said is a perfect argument for One Muppet, One Voice. Whether you think of Steve's Kermit as the "real" Kermit or not, the point is, in Steve's hands he's a singular, evolving character. For purposes of argument, it doesn't matter that it's Steve. It matters...
Was Once Ernie, walkaround costumes are a whole different thing. Nobody's being asked to believe that it's the real thing. There's no possibility of a suit performer being mistaken for the "actual" animated Mickey Mouse. One Muppet, One Voice has no problem with walkaround Muppets, animatronic...
The Broadway analogy almost works, but not quite. All of those stage roles are parts written for an actor to interpret. That's how theater operates -- the writer writes the part, the director casts the part, and for the two hours between curtains, the audience believes that the actor is the...
If Kermit the Frog's live on the national news at the same time as Kermit the Frog is appearing live at a parade, then Kermit should get himself a new manager. No other star is expected to be in two places at once, and I can't see how it makes Kermit more real to be given the power to defy...
Has anyone asked them?
There's been quite a few comments here and at TP suggesting that maybe mall and school appearances are beneath the core performers. That Steve is too big a star these days to show up at a college graduation or a cruise ship, and it's an insult to even ask him.
But...
"Guidelines" isn't quite what I had in mind, OUA. Those are just the requirements I'd want satisfied in my own mind before I personally went to audition. (The ultimate requirement would be that I'd have to actually sincerely want to be a Muppet performer. And right now, I've got myself a pretty...
Thanks for posting this, Blink. Does this change anybody's perceptions of the auditions, I wonder?
Three understudies per character means four separate versions of Gonzo, all claiming to be the "real" Gonzo.
I don't doubt for a second that all the successful auditionees will take their...
No, OverUnderAround, I wouldn't audition. First and foremost because I know that being a Muppet fan, in itself, isn't enough. Being able to do a "pretty good Pepe" isn't enough.
Have I had professional puppeteer experience? Yes I have.
Have I had professional acting and improvisational...
OverUnderAround, let me share a big slice of delicious, hot apple pie with you for taking the time to think about this stuff! You are absolutely 100% correct: "It's important to not draw conclusions as to what Disney wants to do."
Having said that, I don't think we can assume, based on the...
Heya Kev. It's so cool that so many people are chiming in on this debate. MHC's plan to cast multiple performers is a big decision and it's really important that fans talk about the issue like this.
I totally agree with the spirit of your post. I disagree with MHC's specific plans -- I think...
"One good thing ... is that if any members of Muppet Central forum or Tough Pigs forums actually land a job, they will try to be true to the original soul of the character/muppeteer. And I think that's a great positive for the muppets we love."
I know what you mean, and I wish I could share...
Hiya Prawncracker --
Yeah, I saw Goshposh's message before I posted. I think it comes down to your definition of the word "understudy". Or more importantly, MHC's definition. But no matter what that definition is, what we're talking about is more than one performer being authorized to...
One Muppet, One Voice
I don't want to hijack this thread, so I'll be as brief as I can. I have grave concerns for the future of the Muppets under MHC's plan to hire multiple performers via this auditioning process.
I've posted in detail about it at Tough Pigs here...
