They always stated there was more than one puppet on hand at all times, my guess is this would be why. What a shame though, building something like that just to destroy it.
But then again, they may have kept a "stunt puppet" around just for these instances. I know in the old Godzilla movies...

Many of you may have already seen this, but I came across this interview on youtube a while ago, and honestly, what a tool it has been in my quest for some great images of Kermit for a personal puppet (Shhhh, don't tell Disney).

I always looked at it as an oven mit in the top and bottom jaw for your hand!
It wouldn't surprise me if they maybe ran a thin plastic rod across the back of the mouth for the fur to drape over and keep shape.

I don't remember the name of the thread, but I do remember he did a Cookie and an Elmo.....I think he used them for school, he was a teacher if I'm not mistaken?
