The reason I ask is that my entire family had always eaten them with a fork, so that's what I did. I thought everyone did that, until I recently noticed that basically no one else I know eats them with a fork, which made me curious.

At least that's a little more valid than someone thinking that Jim is basically the only Muppeteer that exists...I've seen people say something like:
"Jim sure had a wide voice range to be able to perform Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, and Big Bird."
Back in middle school, I was on a reading quiz team, and in the competition, the moderator was only allowed to say one thing to you if you didn't give the exact answer you were looking for:
"Be more specific."

I disagree a bit. His parents realized that he had to like a car that they bought, because otherwise it would turn out bad for the whole family later on. I think they had the confidence that eventually a car would turn up that he liked enough to quit thinking about the old one, and they knew...
I actually think, if I'm not mistaken, that Robin Williams was originally scheduled for TMS, but then opted out later on or something...of course don't quote me on that...
EDIT: I just checked...in 1979 (around season 3ish), he was announced in a TMS fan club newsletter as a guest star, yet...
Of course puppets still exist...there's all kinds of brands of them...oh wait, I guess I should probably read the thread first...
As to really answer your question, we do not really know if any of the original puppets are still existent. There still is a Red, a Wembley, and an Uncle Matt...
