Is there a proper utensil to use when eating mashed potatoes?

Good quesiton. As a kid, I always ate mashed potatoes with a spoon. Eventually, I ate with a fork. I suppose whatever floats your boat. Or in this case, your potatoes.

The reason I ask is that my entire family had always eaten them with a fork, so that's what I did. I thought everyone did that, until I recently noticed that basically no one else I know eats them with a fork, which made me curious.

When I told them I eat mashed potatoes with a fork, they looked at me like I was nuts.
