If you go to the Sesame Workshop website and click on the "parents" link, you will find that there is a particular philosophy about child-rearing involved that is reflected in the show. This philosophy seems to be particularly against physical discipline. You can also subscribe to their...
Secret Squirrel, if you're out there....
We all seem to have the same issue here, and most of us are coming up with the same solution - can you give us some insight as to what's going on at Sesame Workshop? I know Caroll Spinney mentioned at his booksigning that he's aware that fans aren't...
Hasn't anyone made the point that what's good for monsters isn't necessarily what's good for children, anyway? I mean, they are a species unto themselves - who's to say that cookies aren't a balanced diet for a muppet monster?
After all, Kermit eats bugs!
Though Between the Lions is marketed to a completely different group of children who have hopefully learned TV is pretend and you should be careful what behavior you copy...
Not that this would ever happen, but I think we'd all be bothered if Sesame Street were sponsored by Jack Daniels and had similar "ads" for their product (though a lot of PBS food shows are sponsored by wineries)
I agree that fast food isn't the problem, here - but I maintain that PBS cannot...
It is true that Sesame Street seems much more aware of ratings than ever before. And I don't think it's an accident that more and more pop culture is appearing on the show...
I don't think that's all bad, but it does indicate an attempt to appeal to an audience with expendable income in...
It doesn't have to be this way. We, as citizens, can get government funding for the arts back. We are the ones who get to say how our taxes are spent. I think a lot of people aren't supporting government funding for PBS because they haven't considered that tax-free advertising costs them tax...
OK, but here's the obvious solution: These corporations are using tax-free dollars to run commercials for services the public obviously wants. By using commercials, the programs run the risk of altering their programming to "please the sponsor" (the whole idea behind public television is to...
Here's the big issue, though - should ANY corporation be able to air commercials - because that's what those spots are - on public television? Remember - public television is supposed to be supported by citizens. If a corporation is making a tax-free "donation" to a program in return for a...
It is true that, while many great sketches and songs have made it to VHS, not many are available on CD or DVD - and most are out of print, even if they're out there.
It would be great if SS would hook up with IMusic and sell everything they have on a per-sketch or per-song basis so we could...
I like the box set - it's a terrific way to start a collection if you don't have one already. It's got a good mix of vintage SS and new celebrity songs. I also like the 25th Anniversary special - it's not an episode, but it has a good collection of clips and includes most of the characters...
Too true! Of course, for the first few seasons we couldn't have taped them - most people didn't get a home VCR until the mid 70s (and we actually got a Betamax machine, so if I had, the tapes would be unreadable)
Wow. That's quite a collection you all have - wish I had something to offer, but I just have the tapes available for sale...(sigh :o )
Glad to know it's out there, somewhere, though...
The one with the gorilla I remember from when I was a kid - you know, I always wondered if he was the guy from the Jeffersons!
Wasn't there something in the punchline of that particular skit that involved a bananna and maybe it's peel? I'm very fuzzy on the details...amazing to recall...
Thank you for the compliment, but I agree with GeeBee. One of the things I value most about Sesame Street is its ability to present a wide range of differences, be they fur, language, height, ability or culture.
I found a great article on the roots of SS, and how central cultural diversity...
It is a parents job to let kids know what's appropriate and what's not. If we expect kid's TV to represent perfection, then we're going to wind up with something dull and unimaginative.
For instance, there's a cute Twix commercial where they take a CD and smear it with peanut butter and put...
One I barely remember from when I was a kid
I think it was in the style of "Alligator King", the song was 1,2,3, 1,2,3, 1,2,3, (tee hee hee hee) had something to do with pigs and a lady...
vuelta lijera was how Alta Vista Babelfish translated "Twiddle" I think. I have only enough Spanish to get into trouble - I can usually fake a conversation if you speak Spanish and I respond in English. My son's going to a full-immersion school partially in hopes that I'll pick some up myself...
