They're primarily used as eyes for dolls, teddy bears and other toys. Mercury is one of the world's largest suppliers I think.

I don't fall in to the amateur catagory, but I've done several cockroach puppets like this that are rod controlled.

You can also forgo ping pong balls completely and just use half-dome eyes which are very easy to attach to a head.

Search the forum under "fur supplier" or even just "fur" and you'll come across at least a dozen web sites to check out.
