Not necessarily. You can buy mic mixers for DV cameras that work very, very well and allow multiple audio sources to be connected to almost any decent video camera. They're also handy because they all you to use XLR mics with any consumer-level (or better) camera.

Actually, any foam wholesaler will sell foam (or order it) in almost any size block you want, but it does cost a lot.

I think either can work, it has more to do with the quality of the mic and it's pickup range.

My advice is don't use inexpensive wireless microphones. They rarely work well. Sony does make some decent wireless packs for DV camcorders that cost $200-300 each you can plug a lav mic in to.
