    Brand new Video

I was thinking the same thing about composition when I was watching this too. What really stood out for me though was the lack of definite movement. What I mean by "definite movement" is that the movement of the characters is not very strong. Especially the blue puppet on the left, his eye focus...

This could change the way we design puppets

Spore has been getting a lot of buzz in the Machinima community ever since it was announced a couple years ago. I think where it will be really revolutionary is digital puppetry. Let's hope anyway!

    Puppet Arm Rods

There are tons of old threads about arm rods with great information. Just search the puppetry forum for "arm rods" and you'll find everything you need to know.

    foam thickness

It really does depend on what you have to do, but I like 3/4 inch myself.

    Elephant nose problem

Nice link, I hadn't seen that before. I love Indy Mogul. BTW, here is the direct link - http://www.indymogul.com/post/7166/wesleys-weekly-how-to-prehensile-tentacle

Then you should probably go with the method Blink described. That will work very well.

    Who rememvers this show?

The puppets for both shows were built by Jim Kroupa and 3/Design.

    Elephant nose problem

Does it have to move on it's own, or just be flexible so that the elephant can "play" it?

    learning puppetry

Probably the best thing to do is just do it and practice a lot. Classes can be hard to come by unless you live in one of the bigger cities with a lot of professional puppeteers like New York, L.A. or Toronto, but workshops with an experience TV puppeteer are great (there will probably be some...

    Elephant nose problem

If you scroll down to the bottom of this page you'll see a diagram of a tail/trunk/tentacle mech that's very similar to what Blink described. I've often thought that a pool noodle would work well too, but it really depends on the design and what the puppet needs to do.

    other forms of puppetry

I think you're right, it was Albrecht Roser.

    other forms of puppetry

A really easy and inexpensive way to get started with marionettes is scarf marionettes (similar to the cloth marionettes Stacey mentioned I think). They help you get a feel for how to string and perform a marionette before carving or casting one. I've even used them (minus the strings and...

    Donald Duck Puppet

There was a lot of artistic cross-pollination between animators and puppeteers in Hollywood in the `30s, `40s and `50s. I would not be surprised if the puppet was by Bob Baker who did a lot of work with Disney during that era (he built the original Pinocchio marionette that the Disney animators...

The Monster Makers Mask Makers Book: Thoughts?

I have not read it, but heard good things about it. There is a DVD specifically on latex puppet making from Noreen Young that explains the basics as well. Michael Brose's "Figure Making Can Be Fun" is another puppet specific book that includes a lot of good information on mold making.

Making a Head from Sheet Foam

To make a basic sphere from sheet foam cut 8 wedges out and glue them together. You can change the shape by varying the shape and number of wedges. You can download a wedge pattern here.

    How to start making puppets?

You can also use brush-on latex (apply several thin layers), which is available at almost any art store. I think Sculpt-or-Coat will give better results though.

    Audrey 2 Disaster

I've built five or six sets of Audreys that ranged from really crappy (the first ones) to really good (the later ones). What I found with the, uh, more "challenging" to perform puppets was that shooting rehearsals and studying the video helps a lot. Also, you don't necessarily have to move the...
