They certainly make sense.
They've been using EW in the new half-hour edits on PBS. I've only seen one, but it's cut down to about 7 minutes. It's cropped into widescreen as well mostly (the Noodle family segments are pillarboxed, framed by the window).
So, if they're using segments in the new season, they'll be like that.
New episodes debut on HBO first, and are then re-run on HBO Family. The past five seasons, if I understand correctly, will air on HBO Family as well (seasons 45 & 44 are already on their schedule). An "classic" episode will only be available on demand/through HBO Go/Now.

Not much not already known (except that the "Letter"/"Number" intro songs are still there).
Let's get one thing perfectly clear here:
HBO DOES NOT OWN SESAME STREET BECAUSE OF THIS DEAL.
All they're doing is funding production. Since they're footing the bill for the show, they get advanced airings and streaming rights. That's it. HBO isn't affecting what DVDs they make, what toys...
If that trailer is any indication, there will be some classic episodes (on demand). Though the "classic" stuff (aside from the one E&B clip) is from the late 90's, but we'll see.
Haven't seen the unedited special, but man, that concert must have been fantastic in person. That giant stage & choir is amazing. I felt the balance between Sesame and the choir was good enough. The only thing I know they left out that would've been nice to see in there was the "Twelve Days of...
