Since it is a hand puppet, I would make a 'tree' glove with a main trunk and 3 branches. One branch would be the thumb, the middle branch/trunk would enclose the index, middle and ring fingers, and then the litte finger would be in the remaining branch. As far as picking an apple, I would...
For curling the bangs, I recommend winding the yarn around a pencil or curler and then stiffening them with laundry starch, or even cornstarch and water.
What you said has merit, but I also think that things like the Henson Digital Puppetry System (I think I got the name right) help overcome that. Since the 'user interface' (to borrow a term from programming) works more like a traditional hand puppet, It does allow for better performance of a...
I know there is speculation, but has anyone heard anything with the 'ring of authority' indicating that any of the attractions planned during the original merger--the muppet movie ride, Gonzo's Pizza palace, etc.--are going to be created or would they just be throwing away all of that groundwork...
You're off to a good start with the Rotondo patern. Project Puppet's patterns are excelent for anyone. I would also recommend studying good puppetry performance--Lip-sync, eye focus, etc. Without it, you're just "waving a dolly around". With it, that hunk of foam and fabric is a separate...
I have not personally tried to make a puppet like that but I have seen pictures around the 'net. Jarrod, who posts here frequently under the name Keeeeermit (I think that's the right amount of 'e's), has a replica he made for his personal collection. From what I understand, Full body muppets...
He looks really good. It's almost like instead of being the little guy on the street, Lefty made good and got into the 'Family' business. He makes me think of a mobster. Great work.
I have a question about puppet building/design. How do you get the 2-d character sketches of puppet designs to accurately reflect the final character? Or rather, how do you make the puppet resemble what you drew? Take Jarrod's "Old man/Villain" puppet that he is creating. That character looks...
I would suggest you look at the "Monstro" pattern on Project Puppet. If I'm not mistaken, it shows how to build a 'blank' monster similar in shape to Elmo, and then using the tutorials on this site, and at Project Puppet, you could add facial features to make him look right. I've tried their...
If I'm recalling correctly, Prairie Dawn's body is just a tube. Most of her 'shape' is created by the costuming. It can create curves and other shaping just like the proper cuts of clothing can disguise or create curves and bulges in various places for people.
There are many materials I've seen recommended for a mouth plate. The three that really stick out in my head are cloroplast (that plastic stuff they use to make signs out of that resembles corrugated cardboard), the lids to plastic ice-cream buckets, and/or gasket rubber. The idea is to get...
For the white coating on the foam look for a product called "Sculpt-or-Coat." I think there is information about it on the threads here. From what I understand, it makes a nice hard looking coating that is still light and otherwise usable for puppetry.
Wes and others,
I think the whole "I can't sing as me, but I can in my puppet voice" is a 'control' question. When most people are casually singing, they're not concentrating on any sort of vocal quality--they're just singing for the joy of it or whatever. In character, you are already...
One thing that also helps the scars look more realistic is puckering, bulging and irregularity. In this case, sloppy sewing will help. You want the scars attached securely, but pull your stitches tighter than you normally would and you'll get the misshaping that will make your scar look good...
