Sam and Friends Book Read our review of the long-awaited book, "Sam and Friends - The Story of Jim Henson's First Television Show" by Muppet Historian Craig Shemin.
Finished it. The ending goes into excruciating detail regarding Henson's death... I felt sick reading on the subway. Really strong writing, terribly, terribly sad.
Apart from what CaseytheMuppet mentioned, most of the photos have been in other books, save for some really candid shots taken by Henson's first post-Jane lover.
I'm half way done with it. Really good so far, although it's mostly information we've heard snippets of over the years. Jones doesn't analyze Henson much, he leaves that up to us. Really satisfied so far.
Anyone going to the Museum of Moving Image book signing with Brian Jay Jones and "special guests?" I'd have to skip class, but it might be worth it... haha.
I did know the classic Muppets are now created by PuppetHeap. For some reason, I thought Sesame Workshop makes its own Sesame Muppets now. My mistake.
I agree, Henson needs a stable business partner. I think it's more than three movies they've failed to get started: The Fraggle Rock Movie...
Scooter wasn't flanderized. He was so close to Richard Hunt, I think, that when Scooter was inherited, it was difficult to capture the exact personality. I like new Scooter, but he's different than the Hunt era Scooter. A lot of his personality split between Scooter and Walter.
First, I don't believe Henson makes the Sesame Muppets anymore. Sesame Workshop makes them.
Second, the reason for this is that Jim Henson is dead. Pure and simple. It's not like Walt Disney and the Disney Corporation. Henson was always a small company, a little more than a Mom and Pop...
I agree, that was the only major complaint I had about the book. Oh, so the lawyer who said hi to Joan Ganz Cooney in 1976 when they were on the subway needs a frickin' eight page biography? No thanks.
But what I meant was that, like Street Gang, this is going to be an extremely detailed and...
Kermit is an example of a character who hasn't been Flanderized, necessarily, but he has been given lots of prozac. :p Kermit used to be a bit high strung, with a little bit of a mean streak. He was charismatic, but vulnerable. Now, he's pretty much Hey Arnold! - Mellow, meek, and prone to "go...
Piggy is the best example. She used to be a full-blooded, vunerable character with some extreme narcissim and nerosis. One of the ways Frank Oz explained her essence as "a truck driver who wants to be a woman." Then, somewhere around 2000, she was slimmed down to a character who resolved...
It wasn't terrible. Some of the jokes were funny. The problem is that it's such a carbon copy of The Muppet Show. It doesn't take any risks, it just takes the personalities of the classic characters and waters them down.
Precisely.
As far as DC is concerned, I consider the film, the novelization, and The World of the Dark Crystal to be canon. Everything that came after is just fan fiction, honestly. "Legends" wasn't very good, "Creation Myths" is so-so. I don't care if Brian Froud drew a couple of pictures on...
Exactly! I noticed the same thing. There isn't any unity to the mythology - ironic, considering the central theme of TDC is the quest for balance and unity. This is probably because it's written by so many different people - comic artists, random people, and of course the original information...
Am I alone in having trouble with this? It's so much easier, I feel, when you have complete creative control over a project. With this, I'm worried I will mess up the mythology, despite having studied it extensively. Anyone else feel intimidated?
They're going to throw talentless Disney Channel kids at us. It's just a reality we have to deal with. No use getting angry about it. At least we have The Muppets.
