Poor Gilchrist interpretation. =) The comic strip Muppets, after about the first half year of the run, became VERY simple yet very effective designwise, I would say ... (early on they were more complicated) ... but simplicity tends to be hard to copy and make it work. Would never work for...

The man who animated Roger Rabbit, Richard Williams, is about as far from Disney as you can get, and one of the greatest animators of our times. You can learn an immense amount from his work ... I highly recommend his book "The Animator's Survival Kit," and if you ever get a chance to research...

Hey Toastcrumbs ... my father had the style guide because he drew the Muppets comic strip which ran in the 80s, and also did some licensing art, mostly for the Muppet Babies and some Fraggle Rock stuff .... an excellent piece, that style guide. Have to find it and scan it if it's still around...
