Sam and Friends Book Read our review of the long-awaited book, "Sam and Friends - The Story of Jim Henson's First Television Show" by Muppet Historian Craig Shemin.
I dunno--Ernie's eating habits driving Bert crazy I can understand, but Bert drinking and swearing and sharing a bed with Ernie? That just gives Sesame Street a bad name, especially with the older characters getting phased out.
Hear, hear...I for one miss being able to react to a shocking post with "What the heck ? ! ?" every so often. Most of the MC crowd doesn't abuse multiple punctuation; punishing the majority along with the few who are causing trouble seems grossly unfair to me.
I thought the Count was cool when I was a girl; then again, not too many girls grow up liking monsters, spooks, and witches. :batty: If any Muppets scared me, I'd say Frazzle and the Season 1 Oscar did--go figure!
Strangely enough, Lady Elaine never scared me as a girl--but her domineering, know-it-all personality AND her haglike face bother me now as an adult. What possessed Fred Rogers to include a character like that on his show?
Maria has always been my favorite human character on the Street since I was a girl; she usually knows how to solve problems and help everybody get along. Her being bilingual and musically talented don't hurt, either... :-)
Not so much "non-existent" as "confined to repeat sketches"; the flashback frames (which could include some clip-specific remarks) would at least give Bert and Ernie some new material.
I'd love to see a "classic segment flashback" feature as part of Season 40, too--and have even come up with a way to frame/introduce the old stuff to kids who'd never seen it. (Remember all the Season 1 clips framed by Bert and Ernie watching TV? I was thinking that the flashbacks could open...
Judging by DTWolf's reference to a Leela character on "Dr. Who" (I'm not a fan, but my younger brother is)--if the new Leela's appearance on Sesame Street creates a generation gap, that'll be TV history repeating itself. :-)
That's probably why the producers axed that sketch early on. Granted, your average kid watching Sesame Street isn't likely to imitate dangerous skits; but there must've been enough copycats to make CTW worry.
In spite of all the repeats we'd skip, I'd still love to see a whole early season's worth of episodes (especially one that I was too young to remember the first time around). The only way I could see 130 full hours getting released on DVD, though, would be as a multi-volume set...which would...
Please accept my heartfelt apologies for stirring up hard feelings--to ssetta for thanking a banned member, and to jonnytbird/BooberGorg for mentioning our file trade here, rather than in private messages. In any case, I appreciate the help I've received from those of you who replied...and hope...
Thank you for finding the other episode number, MuppetDude; they're important for the way I organize and upload video files online. *high-5* If rjschex is still active here, he deserves my thanks as well.
I talked with Boobergorg last night, and brought up a trade after asking for his help ID'ing the episodes. We've worked out a deal--he'll get a copy of the disc as soon as my friend can burn one. (It's a shame this computer can't handle DVDs...*shrug*)
My friend said only that he'd traded for them (and BooberGorg told me they weren't in his collection, which surprises me--I'm mailing him a copy of that disc soon!). Thanks to you and Dantecat for tracking down ONE of those episodes; here's hoping I can find out about the other!
A friend recently mailed me a home-burned DVD with two classic episodes of Sesame Street; both apparently aired in the late 80s/early 90s, but they're missing part of the opening theme (which means no episode numbers). Does anyone out there have the numbers for these, or could they track down...
Not everyone has an iPod or can afford to subscribe to iTunes; if Sesame Workshop wanted to make a whole season's worth of older episodes available, they'd probably go with the format most likely to get customers (and DVDs/players are cheaper than iPods, on the whole).
I'd do anything legal, moral, and physically possible to get my hands on the rest of Season 1. Unfortunately, we have as much chance of that as we do of seeing Kermit in a new Sesame Street sketch. Releasing over 100 hour-long episodes on DVD costs a ton of money, more than Sesame Workshop is...
