Is 'Of Muppets & Men' worth the money?

Thanks for the advice, folks! I saw a copy on Ebay today for $39.99 and decided to take the plunge. Condition is described as 'good' with light library markings. Based on past experience of ordering items from the US, it'll take about a week or so to reach me here in Ireland. Looking forward to...

Is 'Of Muppets & Men' worth the money?

I actually work at my local library so already know it's not there :) But we DO have 'The Works' - and a great book it is too. I've searched the library catalog for my entire city and sadly, none of the 22 branch libraries have a copy of 'Of Muppets & Men'. But I'll get hold of it someday :zany:

Oh Where, Oh Where has my Muppets gone?

I seem to recall reading someplace that the Thog costume got so badly worn out that it had to be thrown away. Very sad, but I'm sure the Henson company still have the original design plans and could rebuild him if needed.

    Hugga Wugga or Sclrap Flyapp?

They never showed The Ed Sullivan Show here in Ireland, so I didn't see any of that stuff until the 'Muppets Magic' DVD was released a few years back. Have to say, all that material from the 60s was fantastic. Loved every minute of it... even 'The Glutton', which was ever so slightly disturbing :)

Oh Where, Oh Where has my Muppets gone?

It's particularly true of the full-bodied characters. Sweetums seems to be the only one still regularly used. Doglion popped up a few times since the end of 'The Muppet Show', appearing in 'The Cosby Show', 'Muppets Tonight' and a couple other things, but nothing ( as far as I know ) in well...

    Your Thoughts on Fletcherbird.

That's an oddly charming thought. I think we need some fanart of what the kids would look like :zany:

    Your Thoughts on Fletcherbird.

Actually, I've jut found out that Fletcher and Big Bird DID appear together once: http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Here_Come_the_Puppets! If you look at the screencaps, they seem to have appeared together in a few shots. Now the quest begins to find a copy of this :)

Is 'Of Muppets & Men' worth the money?

I've been thinking of picking up a copy of this book. There's a lot of used copies out there from places like Amazon Marketplace or Abebooks, with $50 being about the cheapest I've seen it going for ( and the price goes up to about $200 in some cases ). While I certainly wouldn't pay a three...

    Your thoughts on Doglion?

Yes, that's right! You can see his head appear as the camera starts to pan down from the globe.

    Hugga Wugga or Sclrap Flyapp?

You know, I've watched that several times but I never even noticed there was a synthesizer involved! I just thought it was 100% natural vocals. :)

    Your thoughts on Doglion?

Yeah, I love that 'Beautiful Day' sketch too. Another of my favourites is Doglion's nice appearance on The Royal Variety Show in 1993, dancing on stage along with Sweetums, Fletcherbird, a couple of Bossmen and The Clodhoppers.

    Hugga Wugga or Sclrap Flyapp?

Heh heh.... Well, I was 30 before I saw it, but I guess if I was a kid my blood would have frozen solid :) It's actually the expressive eyes I love - the way then go up and down to show the Hugga Wugga's anger or surprise. There's really some fantastic puppetry going on there. As for Java, the...

    Your thoughts on Doglion?

Doglion is my favourite of the monsters, and my second favourite full-bodied muppet after Fletcher ( I obviously have a thing for lesser known characters ). I always liked Doglion's Sendakesque appearance and even as a highly strung kid who was afraid of other monsters such as Sweetums and Thog...

    Cutest Muppet Moments

There's a really cute moment at the end of 'The Great Santa Claus Switch' where Thog offers the defeated bad guy a Christmas present and a friendly hug. At least I think that's how it goes... it's years since I saw it so maybe I made that bit up :zany:

What would be your "Ultimate Poser?"

Big Mean Carl would be good... if a giant carrot and several bunnies for him to eat came included :zany: ........have now watched that video about 37 times. I need to stop... :)

    Hugga Wugga or Sclrap Flyapp?

Which do people prefer? :) I saw Sclrap Flyapp on the 'Muppets Magic' DVD ( which is a fantastic disc btw ) and Hugga Wugga when I picked up TMS season one set. While I like both, I have to say I prefer Hugga Wugga, mainly because the muppets used are nicer and the performance seems a little...

    Your Thoughts: The StoryTeller

I have to say that for me, the 30 minute running time seems exactly right. It kind of fits with the style of the show - a tale told in front of the fire before bedtime. Perhaps if stretched out over an hour or 90 minutes, part of the magic might be lost?

    Your Thoughts: The StoryTeller

'The Luck Child' would certainly be my favourite, mainly for that fantastic gryphon. 'The Heartless Giant' would come in second for me. The ending of that one is particularly good with The Storyteller explaining about how when the kid grew older and told the tale himself, the giant survived in...

What would be your "Ultimate Poser?"

Thog, Doglion & Fletcherbird - all full size. And an extension on the house so they'd fit :)

The Muppet Show on BBC1 in the 80's?

Yes, it was shown on BBC during the mid to late 80s. I'm not sure if they showed all 5 seasons or not, but I certainly remember seeing the odd episode now and again when I was at my Gran's. Possibly 1987 or thereabouts...
