According to Muppet Wiki, it was first shown in 1971. I'm not sure if it was still being shown in the 80's. I never saw it on TV when I was a kid.

I finally got Boober deodorized. When he arrived a few days ago, he smelled very musty. :sigh:

The Boober doll I bought on eBay just arrived! He first came out in 1983, and he's in great shape after all these years—no tears or stains, and he still has his hat and scarf. His tag says, "A Tomy Quality Fraggle—Boober." :sigh:
