How to Dye Antron Fleece Tutorial

I've never tried that. I've been lucky with most of the fur I've used over the years in that it looked good without having to do too much to it. I may try boiling some of the fur I have for an upcoming puppet, though. I'll write up a tutorial about it if I have any success.

How to Dye Antron Fleece Tutorial

I finally bit the bullet yesterday and dyed some Antron Fleece. I had done it years before, but due to my inexperience at the time, I wasn't able to dye enough to actually dye enough at a time to make a whole puppet (just heads and hands). Anyway, yesterday, I took the plunge again, but...

next question... darts and how they work?

In that respect, it's pretty good -- but that's about 4-5 pages of good material out of a 100-odd page book. And it's pretty basic. There's also a lot of bad advice in there too (using spray adhesive to glue foam instead of contact cement). The one big plus in the book is that it doesn;t...

next question... darts and how they work?

I think it's just something you have to experiment with, I know that I was intimidated by them at first, but now I can look at a shape and figure out where the darts need to go about 90% of the time. With refinement, I can usually get them in the right place eventually. I know this isn't much...

    Building (and rebuilding) Puppets

It's through the bottom of the puppet. I need to take some good pictures with my hand up inside. These were taken while they were on a cardboard tube held up by a paper towel roll, so there's not much life in them.

    Building (and rebuilding) Puppets

Acrylic Lighting Globes You can cut them out with a Dremel and sand the edges smooth. I'm currently using the 8 inch globe, but they come in many different sizes and weights. The thicker the plastic, the harder it is to cut and the heavier the finished head is to perform, so I try to find the...

    Building (and rebuilding) Puppets

I've been building (actually rebuilding) my puppets for the epic motion picture that we've been working on for the last year or so (see previous post here). I just finished Sam T Dogg -- actually the fifth version of this puppet. Based on a comic character I've been drawing for about three...

    Kermit the Frog Body

I've never had any luck with the non-flammable Weldwood. It never wants to stick the foam. I use the flammable stuff all the time and it works great, though. I guess my puppeteers live on the edge with their hands likely to spontaneously combust at any moment, eh? I'd love to use the...

Is there a substitute for antron fleece?

I would fool around with lower-end materials to start with and try some of the Project Puppet patterns. Any good half-inch upholstery foam will work -- in fact with it not being as expensive, you may be more willing to take chances than with the "good stuff." I can guarantee that your first...

What's the best way for cutting fur?

One thing I always try to do is have the fur lay away from the nose of the character. As long as I do that, the fur always seems to lie the way I want it to.

What's the best way for cutting fur?

You can use the ladder stitch on just about any fabric. in fact, my couch is held together by a ladder stitch after it got a tear all along the back of it. ;)

    Puppets but not Muppets

I think it happens in all art. Just the other day, I had to wrap a present for a friend's birthday, so I printed out a few of my old comics and wrapped it in those. When i got to the restaurant, the hostess commented "Oh! You wrapped your present in comics!" I replied that I actually had drawn...

    Puppets but not Muppets

I usually got "Are those the Crank Yankers?" I wonder if Hanna Barbera ever got asked if they liked drawing Mickey Mouse?

    Keeping glasses on your puppet

I thought I was the only one who sewed my toddler into the car seat.

    Kermit!

I agree. His Kermit impression was pretty good, too! Better than mine -- I sound more like Pee Wee Herman, ;)

    Kermit!

Interesting tutorial for those interested in making their own Kermits. I'd be a little hesitant to start selling them on ebay, though (as he says he's going to do in the future).

What would be good for glasses?

I've been getting a bit of a reputation as a hoarder at work because I'm constantly pulling electronics out of the recycling bin for use on my spaceship set. ;)

    Erect ears

I usually put wire inside them so I can position them correctly. I make kind of a cross out of wire at the bottom that I can sew directly to the foam skull through a hole in the fur on it's head. For things like antennae, I make a small cross out of wire with a small 1 inch or so peg...
