Hmm...yes, it does sound similar...but...

There have been literally tens and tens of fanfiction stories where a character wants to tear down the theatre, and each one is fresh and original.

If cheap ameaturs like us can do it...Segel can.

You know, that seems to be a logical place to start. How the developers will get around the Muppet Theater being listed as an historical building is cause for some concern. I guess big oil has deep pockets!

The NBC Christmas special had two stories - the fight over the theater - and Kermit's significance "being born". This theater sort of story is a proven gig with the Muppets so I don't feel it's too much of a retread. Also remember that special came out November 2003 while this picture is slated for Spring of 2010. There's quite a bit of space between them.

I hate the fact that we have to wait two full years. I will be 30 when this movie is released.

Hey Everyone,
I skipped most of the conversation, though it looks like the recent news of a possible plot has already gotten into the thread. I definitely would rather they treadded brand new territory, and not do another save-the-theater thing, as it has been done, whether you thought it was good or bad. I would hope this one would be better, but still, I'd prefer something totally brand new. Either way, the idea that they're looking to outsiders to freshen up the brand, rather than pretty much letting it stagnate, at least as far as new productions are concerned, seems to be a good thing.
A lot of people out there in younger Hollywood, in the comedy scene, especially, still have fond memories of the glory days of the Muppets, and hopefully this will be realized. The fact that it's been said that it will be old-fashioned is definitely a sign of hope. If I had my way, hopefully it will focus on the old core group, and Pepe will not be paraded in front of our faces. He's okay for what he's worth, but it was disheartening for me to see him given a door on the main page of the new Muppets.com, alongside the core classic group. Biases aside, it's good to know that something is in the works. Hopefully it won't end up in "development ****" as so many other rumored new Muppet projects have, over the past decade or so. Otherwise, if you want to see some comments and lots of silly possible movie titles made by uber film-geeks, check out this link: http://www.aintitcool.com/talkback_display/36218#comment_1984309 . See ya!

Did anyone even read those? Is the average IQ of an "Ain't it Cool" poster 3 or something? if you're going to make immature nasty comments about something you're too jaded by blood porn slasher films to appreciate, at LEAST spell Fozzie's name right. And when you can't even get the name of Sesame Street right, you need to stop watching "Saw 47- This time is Exactly like the Last Time."

Substanceless garbage.

Anyway, even if it is a "retread" Muppets Take Manhattan basically had the same plot as the Muppet Movie. Theyy want to be stars and make it big, etc. etc. But they're 2 completely different films in the execution. That said, It says they're trying to save A theater, not The Theater, so it may just as well be a chartity mission, where they want to help someone out by putting on a show. So it can keep disconnected from VMX if they wanted to. And I think they will.

As long as it doesn't follow the current trend of "Frat boys growing up" plot lines like "Knocked up" was.

It won't be.

This is a great idea. It's simple. And there's a reason Jim said, "Simple is good." You can do more with a small plot than you can with a giant plot.

As much as I love him, and maybe it's just me, but I was happy when they made a collective decision to not have Rowlf speak anymore after Jim's death. I thought it was a perfect tribute. And I was sorely disappointed by what I heard in the Christmas Party Sing Along song. I would've rather they left him as a silent tribute to Jim.

And I think it's also hard with Scooter because it's been a long time since Richard passed away and we really haven't had someone take over that character. Not officially, anyway. And it seems to me that people who were around the original performer do better at stepping into a roll, and really no one who was around back then and got to see Richard perform is available to play Scooter. So, idk. I hope they do something with him, but I'm definitely prepared for any Scooter-bit to seem a little off.

THAT SAID, it's well known that I think the prawn is HIGHLY overused and that focus on him should be cut back.

That is an interesting way to look at it, and i kind of like that. I mean Rowlf was one of the first Muppets with speaking lines. I do feel however if your going to keep one of Jim's Muppets silent then all of them should be, and you could also say if Kermit gets speaking lines then all of the other Muppets Jim preformed should to.
That said I love all of Jim and Richard's voices and I also like how Henson was very carfull on who they got to prefrom who.

I think Pepe is good, but if they really want to get Bill Bereta involved so much let him do some more of Jim's Muppets. (Chef,Rowlf)

I agree, MTM had a similar plot to TMM, but was different enough to stake its own territory. And the plot of "young kids saving the show" has been around for years (back to Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland for instance) and won't go away any time soon. So I'm fine with it.

1. LOL! The Muppet theatre is under threat from an oil company?
I so could see corporations like Halliburton lampooned. Heck maybe Sam the Eagle would end up trying to persuade the Muppets to sell the theatre, "in the interest of national security".

2. This film NEEDS Pepe as one of the main people. Sorry to the old school purists, but Pepe is one of the best darn Muppets to come out post 1990. If not THE best Muppet since 1990.

3. DrTooth, you really didnt like 40 Year old Virgin or Knocked Up? What about Superbad? I HATE mainstream comedies, but absolutely love the writing of these guys. So its not as offbeat as Little Miss Sunshine or Ghost World, but it definately has a more real honest quality to it then most...much more smarter

Not so much didn't like them, as it's not quite what I'm into. Though I do want to see 40 Yr Virgin. My sister actually saw Knocked up and I think she liked it.

Personally, I'm jealous of the fat guys that the girls can't get enough of in projects like this. I look at them and say, if I wasn't uptight, I coulda been one' a them...
