Disney better put it out. Think about it. Puppets have been growing in television popularity. We have more shows today with puppets than any other time. Also, they have a guaranteed Muppet loyal fan base.
I don't think people will watch shows just because they have puppets (or Muppets) in them. That's a faulty assumption that puppet/Muppet fans make a lot I think. TV networks do of course program with a kind of herd mentality -
Hey, Heroes is hot so let's make super hero shows! - but I think that the reality is that the general audience doesn't care if something is puppets, animation or live action; they only care if something is good and if they can relate to it.
I was at one of the big Henson Foundation screenings in NYC a few years ago and Jane Henson was asked about why there wasn't already a new Muppet Show on the air. The point she made was that few people understand how incredibly difficult it was to do the first time and it that took nearly 15 years to put together.
Personally - and this is just my own opinion - while I have the utmost respect for the people who have taken over various characters during the last 15 or so years, the reality is as someone else pointed out that the majority of the people who made the Muppet Show what it was are either dead or semi-retired. What you get now is a 2nd generation copy. It might be a really, really good copy, but it's still a copy.
I think the Muppets without Jim Henson is a bit like Disney without Walt. They can still do great work to be sure, but the special core of what the audience loved about the Muppets - Jim - is gone and it will never be the same again. And perhaps that's exactly the way it should be.
