I know really, lol, I think Del would be annoyed about that!I know - while Rita got her own page long ago. No fair...
I would bet that Jim Henson had it in mind to base the character around Richard. Just a little construction critiscism, I think Del was probably the best developed character in the pilot; the others were a little more cliche or under developed. Actually the same thing apparently happened on Growing Pains. They said Mike Seaver was based on the show's creator and he put all his efforts into creating just that character. But those things can be fixed, it's ultimately whether the network wants to take a chance. In this case, they didn't (personally I would have ).I mean, Del is sort of a reflection of what Richard was/is in real life, a brilliant but crazy puppeteer who is excellent with children, and who'd be the best friend to a lot of people, but who has no patience for people with oversized egos. However, the difference seems to be is that Del is a little more willing to snap at his co-stars, while Richard might have been more likely to just tease them (unless he has to keep a group of second-tier puppeteers in line, but there you go).
Well I'm sure the snapping at the co-workers thing was played up a bit for TV, lol. But Marty Robinson and others did say he didn't mind putting people in their place to keep things in order on the shows. Sort of reminds me of an episode of Star Trek. I can't remember the exact lines, but an Ensign cheekily questions one of Mr. Spock's orders, and Spock comes back with a stinging retort. Mr. Sulu comments, "Don't try to match wits with Mr. Spock. He'll rip you to shreds." I'm sure Mr. Spock would say he was only keeping order on the ship, hehe.
