i just caught this by accident minutes ago. i couldn't believe what i was seeing. my eyes melted. and the mahna bit. i was reeling for about 5 minutes.

Really? Wow - I always thought it was Beverly Sills. That was one of our family's favorite clips when I was a kid.

In the C is for Cookie clip in this special, the setting is Egypt. What does Egypt have to do with anything?

Denyce Graves is the soprano who sang "Operatic Lullaby" with Elmo - she also appears on Between the Lions - she's a current opera star, and that clip was from the '70s or early '80s. (also, she's African-American)

The setting probably refers to the opera "Aida" (same story as the musical) which was extremely popular in the 70's.
