I personally believe that, knowing how much the show is focused on Elmo, Big Bird, Oscar, Cookie, Abby and Grover nowadays, some characters might get phased out when Season 56 starts.
Judging by current appearance counts, the four characters i can see NOT making the cut for S56 (and therefore being retired) are Mr. Snuffleupagus, Telly Monster, Zoe and MAYBE the Count.
The rest of the current "supporting" characters i'm pretty positive will remain in the series.

I can't see any of the iconic Muppets being phased out. They're more likely going to be reduced to having occasional and/or online exclusive appearances. However, there's a very good chance they're going to cut back on much of the human cast.

For the past 5 years Telly and Snuffy have been getting pushed into the background so I could see with the new season a new format them getting pushed into the background even more and maybe Marty even retiring soon and both characters being retired along with him.

I don’t see those two just being retired once Marty (potentially) retires (or even passes away if he chooses to continue on). I’m sure someone like Peter Linz could perform them still.
