I watch almost all of those, but I'm glad someone mentioned the ORIGINAL (and I'll add UNCOLORIZED) "Miracle of 34th Street" (mostly becasue I'm in love with Maureen O'Hara). I just got the new double-DVD but am saving that for Christmas Eve watching.

A Muppet Family Christmas & A Charlie Brown Christmas are by far my two favorites.. I also enjoy He-Man & She-Ra: A Christmas Special (Skeletor is so hilarious in that one) and any of the Smurfs' Christmas Specials (I think I have three on video)

I agree with all of these. Yes, Skeletor is hilarious in that special!

I want to add a Rankin and Bass cartoon called "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." It's such an underrated special. It was about this human and mouse family that lived in the same house and worked together. One of the mouse children thinks Santa Claus is a fake. His father helps him understand the concept of faith, believing in something even when you can't see it. While at the same time, he doesn't discourage his son from being intellectual and smart.

Father Mouse: You mean you believe?

Albert: I don't know. I don't know, Father. But I've learned I've still got a lot to learn.

"Don't except a miracle unless you help make it to be...even a miracle needs a hand."

*South Park did an excellent parody of this special a few years ago, classic!

I'll go into my favorites... but first/...

So I'm curious...is The Snowman known outside the UK?
It is, and yet isn't. it is available on DVD... and years back, books with plush of the Snowman were available. I remember specifically seeing some Snowman stuff based on that special.

It used to air on PBS every Christmas, and at one point, they even showed Father Christmas. But the key word is Used to. Now, during pledge month, we see the same tired music specials, and how to infomercial tax breaks by Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Wayne Dyer. I could go on about that, but it's another thread.

But for my favorites... Yeah, I like Charlie Brown and Garfield and Grinch... but I go to weird specials, myself.

  1. Earthworm Jim: For Whom the Jingle Bell Tolls- Actually, this one iss up on Youtube if you do a quick search. In this special, Queen Slug for a Butt plans to kidnap Santa Claus, and turn him into an instrument of evil, via a brain control chip (though he wasn't exactly portrayed in a positive light to begin with in this special). Meanwhile, Jim must rescue the jolly man at the risk of not getting a pony. (Walter, who is a Mall Santa tells Jim, "Xmas minus Santa Equal no pony, floppy head man). Little Does The Queen Know, Santa is actually Wodan, the Norse god of Judgement.
  2. Invaider Zim: The most Horrible X-Mas Ever- Bow down, Bow Down, Before the Power of Santa. Or Be crushed, be crushed byyyyy His Jolly Boots of Doom- that says it all.
  3. Inspector Gadget saves Christmas- Yes, it's the tired old rescuing Santa from a supervillain plot, but with an Inspector gadget twist. Dr. Claw poses as Santa, while Gadget arrests the real Santa for being a Mad Agent. I just wish they used the original Gadget theme song...
  4. Dinosaurs: Refridgerator Day- A biting satire of Christmas the holiday and every special there ever was. Even going so far as making the retailors the hero of the story. "Your exchange policy idea is exactly what we need to crush the competition, become a monopoly, and serve you better."
  5. Darkwing Duck: It's A Wonderful Leaf- The reluctant villain, Bushroot gets trampled while going Christmas Shopping, and decides to destroy the holiday by controlling the tress to steal gifts. And it just isn't Christmas until Darkwing gets run over (twice) and mutters, "All I want for Chritsmas are my two f-front, tuh-eeth....."

I alos love South Park, the first Simpsons Christmas special, A very Freaking special Family Guy Christmas and both episodes of Futurama.
