i have always thought muppet means a puppet with a man or woman's hand inside it instead of strings.

Nope that is just a Puppet , be it Hand and rod stlye like the Muppets , or a Glove puppet like the ones on Mr.Rogers Neighborhood,

Muppet was just a term coined to Name the characters that Jim's compnay created,

and Foz is right these days a muppet is much more specific since Disney owns the name "MUPPET", it will refer to only the classic muppet show characters,

although peopl will continue to call Sesame puppets and Fraggle rock puppets muppet , they can not be called that in any officla or legal documnets used by either Sesame workshop, or The Jim Henson Company ,

its all quite confusing these days, so i prefer to stick with the Simpsons quote myself
"Well it's not quite a puppet, and it's not quite a mop but man.. heh hehe he... so to answer your question I don't know."

Homer just makes everything so much easier to understand,
