To summarize, if you use Internet Explorer on Windows to surf the web, please be very very careful. And consider moving to another browser, such as Mozilla (www.mozilla.org), Firefox (also www.mozilla.org) or Opera (www.opera.com).

If you think your PC has been infected, you should run an anti-spyware program such as Spybot (http://beam.to/spybotsd) to clean it up.

In the meantime it might be as well to avoid typing any sensitive information into the machine

IE isn't any good, anyway... I've been using Firefox for quite a while now. The second I found out about all the adblocking stuff it had, I was sold.

Indeed. But as long as the average user is content to use IE, problems like this will continue to arise.

Of course, if everyone switched over to say Opera, we'd doubtless be plagued by Opera hacks...

If you want to check whether your PC has been infected:

- Click the Start button and then click on Search
- Make sure you choose the option to look through all files and folders
- Search for files called Kk32.dll and Surf.dat
- If infected use up to date anti-virus software to remove the malicious code
