This episode from the 2nd season (Circa Zero Mostel) is guest star Mickey Rooney.

Cold Opening:

Scooter: Mickey Rooney? Fifteen seconds to curtain, Mr. Rooney?

Mickey: (Looks frightened) Scooter, I don't think I can go on?

Scooter: Why? Are you stage fright?

Mickey: No. Dragon fright. I saw a real dragon!

Scooter: Oh come on. There's no such thing as dragons.

(The head of the dragon burst out the closet.)

Dragon: Surprise!

Scooter: Guess I was wrong.

S & M: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Gonzo: Blows trumpet and fire comes out.

Opening number: Puttin' On the Ritz-Horses did a song and dance number. They even do the old soft horseshoe.

Backstage: Scooter tells Kermit there's a dragon on the loose in the theatre. But, Kermit didn't believe him. Mickey burst out of his dressing room telling Kermit that he saw a dragon. Kermit decided that he can do that song from the movie Pete's Dragon to get his mind over.

Song: I Saw a Dragon-With Mickey Rooney in the bar room telling the monsters that he saw a dragon.

Backstage: Fozzie got a little bit scared told Kermit that there's a dragon inside the theatre. Kermit didn't believe him and left. After Kermit exit, the dragon appeared. He tap on Fozzie's shoulder and said, "Excuse me, but do you have a match I can burrow?" And Fozzie ran away.

Muppet Labs: Dragon detector

UK Spot: Gonzo sings Younger Than Springtime with Camilla.

Vetenarian's Hospital: With a surprise patient, Mickey Rooney stills saying that he saw a dragon.

Backstage: Everybody keeps saying that they saw a dragon. The dragon burst out of the table and Kermit finally realize that Mickey and his friends are right. Kermit was frightened, but the dragon assured him that he's a nice dragon and he dreams to be in the show. And Kermit agreed.

Closing Number: Mickey wasn't afraid of the dragon no more and sings "I Don't Need Anything But You" with the dragon.

Now the cold opening, I don't if it's my best one. I did the best I can.

You're on the right track. Very clever idea of the dragon.
