>>>I would agree that 1989 (bleeding into early 90) was an amazing year in movies, music, and other things. It really does exist as an era unto itself<<<

Its astonishing...all this stuff was happening in the world:
berlin wall came down and communism ended, tiennemen square, exxon valdez, US war against panama, Bush sr came to presidency, Osame Bin Laden and Al Qaida debuted from the remnants of US backed afgahn rebel money, etc...

Yet on the entertainment and media front innocence abounded.
However I believe the early 90's proved to be the darkest days weve seen in awhile.

To me, the late 80's and the spirit of 89' ended in early 1990, or May of 1990. And lasted until early 1993. It parralells my own personal darkest hours as a kid. This era This is when we saw the Iraq war, LA riots, Bosnian war crimes, Bush declaring a 'new world order', Dahmer, Waco, the first WTC attack, etc....and of course the loss of two of the main 4 muppeteers pass away.

So the early 90's were not fun, a dark filled ride where innocence was destroyed...heck even Pee Wee was shattered, one of my fave shows growing up. Look at the movies released then, horrible horrible sequels...back to the future 3, biull and ted's bogus journey, never ending story 2, etc.

Personally, I'm quite the champion of the 90's. They were pretty cool. I mean, sure, the world lost any last bit of innocence and sensibility it had, but at least we got some good music. Can't say the same for this freakin' decade so far, man.

This decade, the 'zeroes'...as Annika pointed out before, it doesnt have its idenity yet. If ya look around, it still feels like 1998. Kids dress like Limp Bizkit and listen to Emenem. Girls wearing 70's bell bottoms is all the rage. The music, ugh...still the boy band and rap rock thing.

As for the 90's, indeed..virtually all my fave bands had some of their best stuff int he late 90's. My fave Bowie album is from 1995(1995, the other great year next to 1989)

But yeah, so far the zeroes arent mor ethan just reality tv shows,
bad rap-rock boy band top 40 tunes, and confused retro fashion. Heck, 2002? It might as well be 1991: Bush is president, Vanilla Ice changed his name to Emenem, and war with Iraq looks iminent. The more things change...

Sorry Cory, but Toys is one of the most inept films I've ever seen. A real embarrassment for Robin Williams (and his CV includes Bicentennial Man and Patch freakin Adams) and director Barry Levinson.

Anyway, my picks....

Star Wars
Best: Empire
Worst: Jedi (and that includes the prequels)

The Godfather
Best: Part II
Worst: Part III (but it's still severely underrated)

Back to the Future
Best: Part I
Worst: Part II

Batman
Best: The original
Worst: Batman & Robin

Scream
Best: Scream 2
Worst: Scream 3

Evil Dead
Best : Evil Dead 2
Worst: Army of Darkness (although it's still fun)

Die Hard
Best: The original. An action classic.
Worst: Die Hard 2

Indiana Jones
Best: Raiders
Worst: Last Crusade (good, but too much of a Raiders clone)

Ninja Turltes
Best: The first one
Worst: Um, the other two

Beverly Hills Cop
Best: The first
Worst: Part III

Muppets - First 3
Best: Muppet Movie
Worst: Great Muppet Caper

Jurassic Park
Best: First
Worst: The Lost World (what the **** was Spielberg thinking?

Alien
Best: Alien
Worst: Alien 3

I can't believe I didn't see one of the greatest series of movies ever made, here. What about Land Before Time????

*waits...listening to the mass of crickets in the background*

Just kiddin'.

Batman was inspired and really brought out a side of Batman that is seen mostly in comics; dark and explosive.

The Godfather was an excellent introduction to the rest of the trillogy, though I have to agree that GF II was the best and the third...well let's just say I was offended that I had spent that much time and money renting the darn thing.

Die Hard, the first one, was the best IMO. The second was my least favorite and the third was alright but then I just don't buy the whole vengeful brother bit.

Now, be prepared. I'm about to commit a mortal sin here. I forgot which came first, Alien or Aliens. I think it was Alien, in which case I would have to say that it was my second favorite right after Aliens. The third was pretty good. I liked the concept of a penal colony. The fourth was just too screwed up for acknowledgement.

I never saw Back to the Future II. It's weird, I know, but I really can't comment on it since...well, since I know nothing about it.

As far as Star Wars goes, I feel pretty much about it as I do about the Godfather series, with one major exception. While I think A New Hope brings the characters to the audience brilliantly, Empire Strikes back is my favorite. Return of the Jedi was an excellent film and I actually like the updated version better, but The Phantom Menace was absolutely my least favorite. I honestly think George Lucas felt bad for that kid who ended up playing Anakin. He probably saw that he would never be in anything else as long as he lived and decided to be merciful.

Alright, I'm going out on a limb here. What about ...*dramatic pause*... Rocky??? The story in the first one was well written and executed. Plenty of drama and a look into the lives of people you might never expect to go anywhere. I liked I-III. IV and V just weren't all that great.

There's more, but I'm outt'a time

Aw yes, Craig...the guy who wasnt into the Matrix. And ya didnt like Toys? Someone get this guy 5000 cc's of imagination and wonderment stat! I got to meet Robin Williams recently, and let him know how much I loved Toys and One Hour Photo.

Anyways, glad theres a few on here who see a brillaint epic film when they see it. Im also a huge huge fan of indie and foreign films. Swingers, Made, Run Lola Run, Cube, Pi, David Lynch stuff, etc So my taste can be pretty eclectic.

Hey Chris-

I know exactly what you mean. While the first Batman will always be my favorite (Jack Nicholson at his absolute best; that laugh cracks me up every time), I appreciate the darkness and sinisterness of the second film, mixed with the happy, the tragic, and the unexpected. I didn't know that it was looked down upon traditionally, because I always thought it was a fantastic sequel. One of the best.

On a lighter note, who could forget the Child's Play series? :stick_out_tongue:

You rock, Matt.

Child's Play...I like the second one. The first one's probably best, though. Hehe.

heh...wanna know something funny? substitute Terminator for Total Recall, and these are ALL movies i had to cut out to narrow to 10...including Drowning Mona! who doesn't want to see...well, i'm not going to spoil it for those that havn't seen it...but it's fun!

oddly enough, the list of movies i love is ever increasing. i don't add them to the list until they hit video/dvd, or Spider-Man would be there...then you get things like Orgazmo, Being John Malkovich, Blazing Saddles, The Abyss, ALL the Kevin Smith movies, Ghostbusters, The Gift, The Dark Crystal, Nightmare Before Christmas, the original Conan the Barbarian, Joe's Apartment (who doesn't love singing cockroaches?), ALL the Muppet movies (even Muppets From Space, proving that a bad Muppet movie is still better than half the stuff on the market today...can you say "Glitter" boys and girls?)
