Indeed...I have a transcript of Richard's speech on my computer, and I read it sometimes if I'm feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders (which is becoming more and more frequent these days). Besides, just listening to his voice is good for the psyche as well - he sounds like someone you'd want to sit down and share your troubles with.

And as the puppetry journal article pointed out, Richard's speech takes on a new level of poignancy when you consider his health at the time. You'd never know that he had a terminal illness just from looking at him and listening to him, but still...

That said, I'd love to see footage of Richard's second speech...that's when he really gets going.

Well not to get too sad here but yeah you probably wouldn't realize it if you didn't know already. But once you do, it does end up making a lot of sense. The way he's talking about celebrating the life that God shares with us (as in, it's given to us, it's a gift that we are fortunate to have, not just entitled to). And also how we sometimes take the good things in life for granted like the trees and flowers (or Muppets hehe). To me, those are the kind of thoughts that don't occur to people very often, unless something happens where they really need it.

Of course, it doesn't always have to be that extreme. I often simply just get the blues and need to remind myself of all the wonderful things around me.

What's also really sweet is when he talks about his "Jim Henson shirt." You can tell he's hoping people will be impressed, hehe.

And I think it's nice that you have the transcript like that, MN! It's always good to have inspirational quotes and reminders. They can make a world of differences when trying to turn your mood around.

It does make a lot of sense - one would get the impression that Richard had something very important to tell the audience, but probably not a lot of time to say it in. And my mom, when I played Richard's second speech for her, said that it was one of those speeches that need to have a lot of emotion behind them - you don't just make them every day.

And I really liked how Richard added his own touch to Jim's last words. "Forgive your anger. Forgive your guilt. Your shame. Your sadness." You can tell, judging from the tone of his voice, that those words are really coming from the heart.

Of course, the Jim Henson shirt...looks to me like it's some sort of variegated stripe pattern. And he's definitely got a tie on.

Well it's sort like how he seemed to approach his performing. Either you really go for it, being silly, or in this case truly heartfelt, or you don't. Anything half way won't do it justice.

And I really liked how Richard added his own touch to Jim's last words. "Forgive your anger. Forgive your guilt. Your shame. Your sadness." You can tell, judging from the tone of his voice, that those words are really coming from the heart.
I agree, that seemed to make it more personal. And often one of the hardest things for anyone to do in life is forgiving themselves.

Also, I showed this to a friend and she thought he looked much older, but that when you concentrate on his face and performance during "Simon Smith" you can see that he obviously must have played Scooter.

Do you suppose that sometime you feel as if the wight on your shoulders is because you work for a school news paper. The wight being the content in the paper? I know that watching that reading the news sometimes just get sad to me because theres just so much awful thing happing in the world, you know? So I can just imagine what it must be like for somebody putting it all together.

I caught his tie the second time!

Sorry to change subject, again. But I'm thinking of re-starting my wedding website or whatever it's called again, and get some stuff in order. I'm going to be married come Summer '09 so in my mind I've gotta get stuff going.

Ah - congratulations to you, Sara. And I hope your foot's feeling better.

Actually, Will, what I'm really feeling the weight of is school work and the prospect of the job hunt. The school paper's been on hiatus for a few weeks, so it's not the biggest source of tension headaches these days.

I had been wondering where the Muppet performers were seated in the cathedral, and where Richard and the others stood to give their speeches.

I noticed that Richard periodically moves his hands in small circles when he's talking, sort of gesturing with his note cards.

Also that, and my mother is going to probably kill me once she finds out that I've spent almost $50 at asianfoodgrocer.com. I got a dozen Hello Kitty ramune sodas, 6 packs of gum, some collectible candy thing, and a package of some strawberry chocolate candies. The dozen ramune sodas are really where the money is going towards, that's almost $25 of the money right there. Plus there's about $7 for shipping. the collectible candy thing is another $8, the gum is $6 and the strawberry chocolate is about $4. That's $49 right there, rounded up! I believe it was exactly...$44.96, actually only about $45.

Still, she's gonna kill me. This is what I get for being depressed and with over $100 in my bank account. I get this "gotta spend money or it's gonna burn a hole in my pocket" feeling. Oh well, by the time she realizes I've spent the money, I'll probably have another check in the bank anyways. (It takes close to a week to get here, as it's coming by FedEx Ground and it takes 5 business days to get here. That means it'll be...next Tuesday when it gets here, if it's perfect timing.)
