Yeah that was definitely my initial thought as well, how writers take liberties sometimes. He might have made a Basketball reference and the writer decided to run with it. Lol

Yeah, and in one of my journalism classes, the prof told us that public relations people often make quotes and stuff up. With the subject's permission of course, but as a rule we don't rely on press releases as primary sources. Besides: are you really gonna believe some hokey press release over the man's own mother? She who bore him and gave him life?

But I really like Richard's line about going out to shoot left-handed hoops after a long day of puppeteering. That's a classic Richard quote, and he does seem the kind of person who would go off to the local court for a bit after work.

Hehe yeah, really. I do think his mom would know best! But that is something I've learned too (it's actually hard not to learn sometimes), that you can't always trust everything you read with stuff like that.

Very true, you can't trust everything you read. Although, writers also point out that interview subjects obviously won't always remember details accurately. And it's difficult to try and correct them. Reporters and writers are in a difficult profession. As I've once heard, part of their job is basically asking someone "What were you doing on June 13, 1965?" Generally you can't answer that, but that's what reporters need to ask of their subjects all the time.

I'm not saying that's definitely what happened here, I'm just sticking up for writers in generals. Hehe

Yeah, but on the other hand, not to sound snobbish or anything, "playing with puppets" is a bit different from professional puppeteering. Know what I mean?

That's right; Jane raised him and four other kids, so she's well aware of what his favorite childhood hobbies were.

And about not believing everything you read: the PR people here at this school have this nasty habit of glamorizing and switching about facts in the press releases. It's a bit of a bother when I'm interviewing the subject of the press release. Oh, well, that's what we're there for, to sort out the facts.

Ugh, I can understand the frustration MN!

I still say it's a bit of both. Reporters occasionally mess with the facts, which is of course upsetting. Then again subjects often misremember things, but still stick to their stories for years.

That's true. Journalism's a risky business, and it gets riskier everyday. But it's important. And it's a sad day when people twist the facts and pass it off as front-page news, and give real reporters a bad name.

And we've had a poor relationship with the PR people for years - guess it's cause of the pressure coming down on them from the administration. They're playing up all the glossy goodness and we're exposing the warts, so it's only natural. But the professors love us for the most part.

Well, your group does sound pretty impressive, despite the inevitable clashes. Heh, I can see professors liking the warts and all stuff. It's good to be honest in journalism.

It' kind of like when a big corporation get's called out or critisized for somthing that wen horribly wrong with employee and what not. The first think in the press release to the pulbic it alwasy the dinial and responsibility of any wrong doing to cover themselves and their Image. It's like they are perfect and blameless alway and can never do any wrong. And nothing could especially go wrong in such a large setting like that.

Sarcasm...
