Hello everyone! Here is Episode 5 of The Next Food Network Star:
The finalists went to the Food Network Kitchens and when they arrived, there were 6 baskets in front of them. Suddenly, Cat Cora - from Iron Chef America - came out and described the first part of the first challenge. There were 6 ingredients in each basket and they had to make a dish from those ingredients in 30 minutes. When they were done, Cat Cora explained that they must describe their dish but can't use words like "delicious" and "awesome". However, there was a twist: Cat made the finalists switch plates with someone else and they must describe the food. Kelsey tasted Shane's dish and thought the butter he used was regular butter, but it was Jalepeno butter. She also used the word "flavor" in presentation. Shane tasted Kelsey's fish and did a great job of what the flavors tasted like. When Aaron tasted Adam's dish, he took too long tasting it and didn't say much. Adam tasted Adam's cake but he didn't anticipate the ending of the time limit - 1 minute. When Jennifer tasted Lisa's udon noodle dish, Jen thought they were linguini pasta noodles and felt clueless on other parts of the dish. Lisa tasted Jen's dish but she didn't connect with the camera. Later, Cat announced the winner of the challenge: Shane. It also gave him an advantage in the next challenge.
After that, Cat appeared with Barbara Fairchild, the editor-in-chief from Bon Appetit magazine. Mrs. Fairchild said whoever won this challenge, their recipe will featured in the August issue of the magazine. For the challenge, they must take a complicated dish and reinvent it in under 45 minutes. Since Shane won the last challenge, he and Kelsey chose Beef Wellington. His winning advantage also made him choose which team would do the food. He made Lisa and Jen make turducken and Aaron and Adam got stuck with Coq Au Vin. When they were finished with their food, they must not only present it to the selection commitee - plus Cat and Fairchild - but to the editors of Bon Appetit.
The finalists all went on a 30 minute grocery shopping spree. Then, they all went to Cafe Gray where the finalists would present their dish. The first team to make their dish was Adam and Aaron. Their chicken was still raw, which led Aaron to a flashback from the second episode - where they were on a train - and he didn't want to fight with Adam again. When they were plating their food, it was a mess - the noodles were over the bowl. After they presented their version of Coq Au Vin to the people, Mrs. Fairchild thought Aaron was nervous and Adam seemed to think very wittly on his feet.
Now, it was Jen and Lisa's turn. When Jen tried to open the marinade for the chicken, Jen broke the bottle and it spilled all over Jen's squash and Lisa's duck confie and it all went into the trash. Both of them felt angry at one another and felt like they were going to fail. They wanted to put a special sauce on the turducken, but it took too long, so they skipped it. Bobby Flay questioned them about what had happened and said he was okay with it.
Finally, it was Shane and Kelsey's turn. The whole kitchen was out of control and they were hurrying to get their plating done. They felt pretty confident about their dish when they were presenting it. Some thought the plating was horrible, but it tasted pretty good.
Later that day, everyone felt uncertain as to who was going home that night. Kelsey needs to stop mentioning culinary school. Lisa needed to be nicer. Aaron needs to be more confident. Before they could decide who should stay and who should go, they announced the winners of the challenge and have their recipe in Bon Appetit magazine: Shane and Kelsey. Because of this, they were safe and so was Aaron and Lisa. Bobby said to Adam that he was on thin ice and Jen wasn't successful in reaching her expertise. They then decided to keep Adam and let Jen go. Jen hoped that her time on The Next Food Network Star would make her daughter realize to never give up.
