Chapter Five: Anything's Possible

S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage, and Logistics Directorate) was a counterterrorism and intelligence agency that often dealt with superhuman threats, just like the recent Hulk threat. Nick Fury, creator and second known executive producer, usually led the organization that often operated as much as a covert agency as a quasi-military one. It was initially depicted as affiliated with the United States government; but in later years, it was under the jurisdiction of the United Nations, with vast technological resources at their disposal.

Working with General “Thunderbolt” Ross was quite an experience for Fury, during a time when the general’s vendetta against the creature had become uncontrollable. As soon as Ross learned that the Hulk was back in San Francisco, he knew that joining forces with S.H.I.E.L.D. would ensure the end of the Hulk, especially since the organization had faced the Hulk once before, soon after Fury’s Intel revealed that the monster was in fact former S.H.I.E.L.D. member, Dr. Bruce Banner. The two generals operated their Hulk mission high above the clouds in an aircraft that was larger than four planes put together. Fury sat in the enormous cockpit with twelve of his soldiers around him, operating different functions of the craft, just as Ross came in and approached him.

“What’s the status of our search, Fury?” He asked.

“We just tapped into a recent phone call that was made by someone named Skeeter Grosse and sent directly to Banner.” Fury replied, and he turned to one of the soldiers sitting in the cockpit. “Play back the recording.”

“Yes, sir.” The soldier acknowledged, and he pressed a few buttons and turned a large knob, playing the conversation between Skeeter and Bruce.

Hello?” Bruce said.

Dr. Banner?” Skeeter uttered.

Yes, this is him. Who is this?

This is Skeeter Grosse…Scooter’s twin sister.

Oh, yes. I remember you, Skeeter. Dr. Richards used to be your physician at the clinic. How are you?

I should be asking you that, Dr. B. You know, with all of these military and spy guys on your tail.

You’ve heard about that, eh?

Who hasn’t heard? My brother’s been nagging over the whole thing, ever since he heard about it on the news.” Bruce was heard sighing over the phone, sounding a bit distressed.

How has he been doing?

Well, despite the fact that his own doctor is creating chaos across San Francisco, I have to say that he’s surprisingly doing fine.

I just wish that I could handle his operation for him. With my transformations coming at unexpected moments, I can’t risk operating on him.

So who’s going to do it?

I’ve gotten Betty Ross, my colleague, to take care of things. It’ll be okay. She cares for Scooter as much as I do, so he’ll be in good hands.” Hearing that brought half of a smile to Ross’s face; he was pleased to know that his daughter was using her medical skills to do good for someone. “I’ve got a feeling that you didn’t call me to talk about Scooter’s health, Skeet. What’s on your mind?

Dr. B, how would you like to be on television?” Ross and Fury exchanged odd expressions, as there was a long pause over the recording.

WHAT?!?! Skeeter, have you lost your mind? I am a wanted man! I’ve already got my ‘Mr. Hyde’ face on television already.

Just hear me out for a sec. If you were to appear on our program, Muppets Tonight , and admit to S.H.I.E.L.D. and General Ross that you’re tired of turning into the Hulk and want them to find a cure for you, then I’m sure that they’ll leave you alone.

No! No way, Skeeter! They wouldn’t give up that easily! These people want to take me apart and see to it that the Hulk never destroys again!

But wouldn’t you at least want to say you’re sorry, even though you didn’t do anything wrong.

It’s not that simple, Skeet. What I’ve done last night and over the past months aren’t the type of things that you can just say ‘You’re sorry’ to someone about. I didn’t spill milk here, and I’m not even going to cry about it.

So, what are you going to do?

I’ll just have to find someplace where Ross and S.H.I.E.L.D. won’t find me. The problem is…there’s no hiding from them. No matter where I go, they’ll find me there.

Why not come here?

Come where?

Come here.” It was that moment when the recording had stopped, and Ross was left feeling a little confused.

“What did you stop right there?” He asked. “Didn’t they reveal the location?”

“No.” Fury replied, disappointedly. “Grosse must’ve figured at that moment in the conversation that we could’ve possibly been tapping into the phone lines and also that if she was to tell me the place for him to come, then we’d be coming there in a flash.”

“This Skeeter Grosse is a lot smarter than we anticipated.” Ross said.

“She gets it from her mother, Sadie Grosse.” Fury remarked. “As a matter of fact, both of Sadie Grosse’s children have I.Q.’s that are almost as large as Banner’s.”

“If Banner has such a large I.Q., then how come he hasn’t found a way to eliminate the beast within him?” Ross inquired.

“Banner’s come across a phenomenon that even he can’t understand.” Fury said. “Didn’t he say that the cause of his Gamma-radiated cells is by some accident from an experiment on nanomeds?”

“That’s what Betty told me.” Ross said, and Fury quietly sat his chair, deep in thought. “Why do you ask?”

“No reason.” Fury told him. “I just wondered what kind of operation Scooter Grosse needs that Banner can’t handle for him.”

“Are you suspecting that the nanomeds Bruce and my Betty have been experimenting on have a connection with Scooter Grosse?” Ross asked.

“You did say that your daughter has recently been involved in that particular project again.” Fury replied. “What if she and Banner are attempting to use the nanomeds on Scooter Grosse?” Ross thought about the possibilities, and they made him a bit uncomfortable.

“If they’re attempting such a thing, then it’d require using the same Gamma technology that they used during their first attempt.” Ross stated.

“And Scooter Grosse plus Gamma radiation equals…” Fury said, and he stopped when both generals’ eyes widen in shock, realizing the consequences to Scooter’s operation. Immediately, Fury turned to another soldier, with great deal of urgency in his voice. “Get a chopper ready for Ross, myself, and six other soldiers! We’re heading for the St. Kirby’s Medical Clinic now!”

“Yes, sir.” The soldier acknowledged.

Only a few moments later were Ross, Fury, and six S.H.I.E.L.D. soldiers were boarding a black chopper in the main docking area of the aircraft. They were armed with some of the most advanced weaponry in their arsenal, prepared for what could possibly be a horrendous visit. As soon as they were all in the chopper, the doors to the docking area parted open, allowing the chopper to fly out into the evening sky.

-------------------

There were a lot of anxious people coming to the KMUP station that night; they heard about the one-on-one on-air conversation between Skeeter Grosse and Bruce Banner that was scheduled to happen. Banners (no pun intended) were hung all over the building by Pepe and Seymour, each having a fantastic rendering of Bruce Banner transforming into the beast himself while Skeeter stood in front of them, smiling.

Amongst the anxious crowd were a couple of characters that were visiting San Francisco, just for this occasion; their names were Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable, two teenagers that usually fought crimes on nights like that one. The two didn’t even bother wearing their usual gear (black shirt, black boots, and gray/khaki cargo pants) to the occasion; instead, Kim wore a white t-shirt with a heart stitched on it and violet-colored jeans, and Ron with his usual red/white/black shirt and his beige cargo pants, which he usually kept his pet naked mole rat, Rufus, in one of the pockets. Their reasons for attending the event were very much differentiated: Kim loved the Muppets and Ron loved the stories he read about the Hulk.

“THIS IS GONNA BE SO AWESOME!!!” Ron yelled, startling some of the people around him with his hyper attitude. “Can you imagine what it would be like if Banner just ‘Hulked-Out’ right in the middle of the interview?”

“Yeah…I can imagine several people running out of the building and freaking out, while a ten-foot green man crashes through walls and roaring like a wild lion.” Kim said. “Ron, this is not some theme park attraction. Notice how there isn’t any police officers or military soldiers around to guard the scene, just in case Banner does ‘Hulk-Out’?”

“What are you talking about, K.P.?” Ron asked, just before he pointed towards Bobo the Bear, the jovial but bumbling security guard at the KMUP TV studio. “Ya see? There’s one police officer right there.” Kim glanced over at Bobo, who was eating a honey and peanut butter sandwich at the moment.

“Ron, that’s not a police officer.” She said. “That’s a security guard.”

“There’s a difference?” Ron asked, and Kim rolled her eyes with disgust.

“Let’s just hope that nothing goes wrong tonight.” Kim uttered, as she and Ron went into the building and took their seats in the stands with the rest of the audience.

Meanwhile, in the backstage area, Scooter and Sadie (who both had no idea that tonight’s broadcast of Muppets Tonight involved an interview with Bruce Banner) were heading out of the studio, until Scooter remembered that he needed to check the storage room. Skeeter, who was standing nearby when she heard him mention the storage room, quickly jumped in front of him and blocked his path.

“Don’t worry about checking the room, bro.” Skeeter said, trying not to appear as if she was hiding something. “Just tell me what it is that you need to check in the storage room, and I’ll get it for you.”

“Oh, it’s not the storage room itself that I wanted to check.” Scooter said. “I just wanted to see if the room was unlocked.” The truth was that Scooter had actually unlocked the storage room only a few hours ago, but Skeeter came to it shortly afterwards to lock it, because that was where she was keeping Bruce Banner, and also where she was going to conduct her one-on-one interview with him.

“Don’t worry about it, Scooter. I’ll handle it.” Skeeter said. “You just go get your operation taken care of; that’s what’s important right now.”

“That’s very kind of you to think about your brother’s health like that, Skeeter.” Sadie complimented.

“Of course it is, Mom.” Skeeter said. “He’s my brother. His health should always come before business.” Sadie and Scooter just smiled at her, as they started heading for the exit. When they were near the door, they suddenly heard the crowd chanting nearby.

“HULK! HULK! HULK! HULK!” The crowd yelled, and Sadie & Scooter tried to make out what the crowd was saying (it was hard to, since they were chanting out of sync), while Skeeter signaled for Animal to quiet down the audience. Animal nodded in affirmation, just before he walked out onto the stage and faced the chanting audience.

“QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Animal bellowed, and every member of the audience quieted down, except for Ron, who was still chanting.

“Hulk! Hulk! Hulk! Hulk!” He said, until Kim elbowed him in his side, silencing him. “OUCH!”

“Thank you.” Animal said, and he walked backstage, where Sadie and Scooter were still trying to figure out what the audience was chanting.

“Were they…?” But Skeeter didn’t give them the opportunity to finish their question.

“Uh, uh, you two had better get going, before Dr. Ross thinks you chickened out or something. And, uh, don’t worry about a thing, because Clifford and I will have everything under control.” She forced Sadie and Scooter out through the exit, and once they were gone, she sighed with relief. Clifford, who was ready to start hosting tonight’s broadcast, had come backstage to greet her.

“Hey, Skeet,” He said, “Before we get this show on the road, there’s something I’ve got to know: how in the heck are you gonna interview Dr. B, when he made it clear that he didn’t want to be on television?”

“Simple.” Skeeter said, and she pointed to the Muppets Tonight pin on the left side of her green sweater. “See this? Before I left Manhattan, Bunsen and Beaker made this hidden camera for me, and I used it to pull practical jokes on Scooter all of the time.” Skeeter chuckled as she reminisced. “I remember this one time when Scooter was in the bathroom, and he was…”

“Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!” Clifford exclaimed. “I don’t need details, Skeet. I just wanna get this show started, before Scooter and Sadie get back and find out what’s really going on.”

“I just hope they didn’t notice the posters that have this building wrapped like a fast food burger.” Skeeter uttered, just as the Muppets Tonight theme music blared and Clifford went out onto the stage to greet the audience.

Chapter Six: The Operation

Soon after Sadie and Scooter arrived at the St. Kirby’s Medical Clinic, the operation commenced, and while Scooter was in the operating room with Betty and the other surgeons, Sadie was left sitting in the waiting room with a middle-aged gentleman wearing a tan-colored shirt with a black tie, dark gray slacks, and black shoes. As she sat there in that room with him, she barely gawked at him; but she wanted to, because he looked like the type of guy who was stuck in the fifties. Figuring that she must’ve been really interested in who he was, she brought herself to turn and talk to him.

“Hey.” She said, and the man looked away from the newspaper he was reading and smiled at Sadie.

“Hello.” He said, puffing his old-fashioned pipe and turning back to his newspaper.

“May I ask you a question?” The man looked back at Sadie again; she didn’t know it right away, but the man had to be one of the nicest people in the world. He was nice and neat enough to fold the newspaper that he was reading, put it down on the table in the center of the room, and turn to Sadie, focusing his attention on her.

“Fire away.” He said, and he sounded enthusiastic when he said those words, even adding a small chuckle after he said them.

“Do you work here at this clinic?” Sadie asked, and the man grinned, shaking his head.

“No. My wife does.” He replied.

“Your wife’s a doctor.”

“She used to be just a brain surgeon, but she has worked her way up to handling any kind of surgery now.” Sadie was pleased to hear that, since Scooter was in surgery at that moment, and the only reason she started the conversation with the man was because she figured he was a surgeon himself.

“Is she one of the best surgeons in San Francisco?” Sadie asked.

“Oh, goodness, yes!” The man exclaimed. “I can’t tell you how many people have happy brains thanks to my dear wife.”

“Has she ever handled a liver or nanomeds before?” The man had to think about that for a moment; his wife didn’t often share some of the things that she handled at her job, which he led him to assume that she did almost everything.

“I don’t know if she’s ever handled those things before. But I do know this: ‘Anything’s possible for a Possible’.” Sadie wasn’t sure what he meant by that, but she was certain that it meant “Yes.” “Is someone you know going under the knife for liver surgery?”

“Yes…my son is.” Sadie said.

“Oh, then I’m one hundred percent sure that Scooter will be fine, Ms. Grosse.” The man said, and she was taken aback by the realization that he knew who she was the whole time. “My name’s James Timothy Possible. My wife is Dr. Possible, one of the surgeons in there with Dr. Ross, handling your son.”

“How long have you known?” Sadie inquired. “I mean from the very moment I said ‘Hey’ to you, how long have you known?”

“I’ve known since the first time Scooter came to see Dr. Banner.” Possible said. “He and Betty shared tons of stories with my wife, who shared those stories with me at home.”

“What kind of stories?” Sadie asked, becoming a little suspicious.

“Don’t worry, Ms. Grosse.” Possible remarked, holding his hand up in protest. “None of it is personal stuff. Just stories about Scooter’s job at the KMUP studio.”

“Oh.” Sadie said, relieved. “Do you watch Muppets Tonight?”

“Can’t say that I have.” Possible said. “I have a bit of a problem with television.”

“Oh, so you’re one of those, eh?” Sadie assumed.

“Guilty as charged.” Possible admitted. “Even while my three kids are watching an episode of some popular reality show, I just sit back, smoke my pipe, and pretend that I’m working on another rocket for a science program.”

“You’re a rocket scientist?” Sadie said, truly impressed, and Dr. Possible chuckled again.

“Once again…guilty as charged.” He said.

Meanwhile, in the surgery room, Betty was in the process of reopening the stitched part of Scooter’s abdomen with a scalpel, while the good-humored, chipper Mrs. Dr. Possible (Dr. Possible’s wife and Kim Possible’s mother) and two other surgeons were standing by and waiting for the stomach to be completely opened. A silver, metallic container, which contained the nanomeds that they were going to attach to Scooter’s liver, was sitting next to a set of surgical tools on a nearby tray. Mrs. Dr. Possible chuckled as she glanced at Scooter’s stomach.

“This little fella sure has one cute belly.” She said.

“Yeah.” Betty said, also chuckling. “It’s just too bad that it has so many problems inside.”

“Bless his little heart.” Mrs. Dr. Possible uttered. “You know, my Kimmy-Cub just loves these Muppets to death. Jim and Tim always poke fun at her about it, but I think it’s just the sweetest thing.”

“They are a mess, aren’t they?” Betty commented. “I guess that’s what made this operation so personal for me.”

“You’re a big ‘Muppet Maniac’ yourself, Betty?” Mrs. Dr. Possible asked.

“A little bit.” Betty said. “But I’m more of a ‘Hulk-Maniac’ than a Muppet one.” Just looking at the distress on Betty’s face, Mrs. Dr. Possible knew that she probably wouldn’t want to go any further into the conversation, even though she knew it would’ve been best to talk about it all. But before she had the opportunity to start up the conversation, Betty was done opening Scooter up; she turned to the two other surgeons afterwards. “Alright. Dave, Frank…you guys keep it open long enough for Possible and me to get the nanomeds attached to the liver.”

“I’ll get them.” Mrs. Dr. Possible volunteered, and she grabbed the container from the tray rather quickly, much to Betty’s dismay.

“Careful!!” She exclaimed, and Possible nearly dropped them, due to being startled from Betty’s alarmed tone of voice.

“What?!” Mrs. Dr. Possible remarked. “These little things are barely the size of my belly button, and they’re in a container. What’s there to be careful about?”

“If you move the container around too rapidly, you’d risk increasing the rate of Gamma radiation inside it.” Betty explained. “And if the radiation is way too high, then the nanomeds will explode once activated, taking Scooter with them.” Possible’s eyes widened with surprise, as she stared at the container; the thought of Scooter exploding nearly made her throw up and cry.

“Oh, dear.” She said, as she walked over to Betty and handed the container to her. “I’m glad you’d stopped me then.” Her right hand went to her chest, once it was free from the container. “It’s a good thing you’re in charge of this operation, Betty. If it was me, and it was a brain we were working on, this patient would be for sure a walking volcano.” Little did Possible know that her own joke would sicken her even more. “Sorry, folks. I’m new at this.”

“It’s okay, Possible.” Betty said. “Let’s just carefully get these nanomeds attached to the liver, so we can move on to the Gamma Chamber portion of the operation before bedtime.”

“That reminds me,” Mrs. Dr. Possible said, “I better call the babysitter and see that the boys are in bed before ten.” Opening up the container, a green haze was released from it, signifying that the nanomeds were already infected with Gamma radiation. While the two surgeons were holding open the hole in Scooter’s stomach, Betty and Dr. Possible both alternated in placing the ten tiny robots on Scooter’s liver. They handled the job very, very slowly, which only lengthen the time spent on the operation.

Moments had passed in the clinic, and it seemed to the surgeons that they were in that room for a month, while time didn’t seem to matter for James Timothy Possible or Sadie Grosse, as they shared pictures of their kids with each other. Just from that particular discussion that they spent a half-hour on, the experienced father and the experienced mother discovered some parenting tips that they wished they had learned a long time ago. The two also found out some interesting facts about Possible’s kids (Kim, Jim, and Tim) and Sadie’s children (Scooter and Skeeter), such as Kim’s crime-fighting skills and the details over the adventures Skeeter and Scooter had back in Manhattan with a demon named Eli and a kind woman named Nancy (whom they once called “Nanny”).

“You mean to tell me that because Skeeter had her liver operation and lived to tell about it, Nancy died?” Possible inquired, and tears started to come out of Sadie’s eyes; the memory still had an emotional effect on her.

“Yes.” She said. “Skeeter still feels guilty about it all, thinking that if things went differently, Nancy would still be here with us. But, as Nancy said before she…died, ‘Her job was done and it was her time to leave.’”

“I’m so sorry to hear that.” Possible said, rubbing a hand up and down Sadie’s back, comforting her. “I remember when I lost my old nanny, only a couple of years after I left the old nursery that my folks always left me at, while they were working up a new formula for gas.” Sadie wiped her tears away and composed herself, focusing the discussion back on Dr. Possible again.

“What about Kim?” She asked. “How did she spend her childhood?”

“Ah, Kimmy was a peach who became real pineapple as she grew.” Possible said. “There was no babysitter that we could hire to handle her. I remember this one time, while Kimmy was in kindergarten for the first time, we found out that she had saved a boy from a gang of young miscreants on the playground by pulling off some of the most incredible moves for a five-year-old.”

“Five years old? And doing karate? In kindergarten?” said the impressed Sadie.

“Yep.” Possible remarked. “Little did we know that the boy she saved was Ronald Stoppable, who’s been her best friend since then.” Sadie just shook her head over the history of Kim Possible; she was so intrigued by the story that she completely forgot about the one involving her own children.

“Wow.” She said. “I’ve got to give you credit, Dr. P, because if that were me, I’d put them up for adoption.” Both Sadie and Possible laughed heartily; but their laughter was soon halted, when they heard the sound of marching footsteps, accompanied by the voice of an angry nurse.

“Hey! Did you hear what I said?!” The nurse exclaimed. “You people can’t just march up here and poke your noses into rooms reserved for patients and doctors only!” The nurse and the men that she was screaming at had appeared in the waiting room. Possible and Sadie jumped out of their seats with surprise, as they realized that the men were Nick Fury, “Thunderbolt” Ross, and their S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

“Ma’am, I don’t think it’s smart to mess with us.” Fury said. “We are part of the government, and we have every right to search throughout this hospital complex.” Dr. Possible stepped up to the soldiers and took charge of the situation.

“Now, let’s just calm down for a second, gentlemen.” He said. “What seems to be the issue here?” Fury, Ross, and the soldiers just looked to one another, wondering who Possible was and what business he had getting into theirs.

“Sir, this is a government matter.” Ross stated. “I believe it would be best for you just to mind your own business.” Possible was very offended.

“Now, just a minute, General!” He exclaimed. “I just happen to be building some of the most advanced missiles that your military has been using for the past twelve years. I believe I have some authorization here.” Ross looked closely at Possible, and the hardheaded general seemed to have recognized him.

“James Timothy Possible?” Ross uttered, and Possible nodded, with a stern expression on his face. “I remember the day you helped built the plasma bomb that gave us leverage in the Latveria mission.”

“My daughter and her friend saw to it that your soldiers took down the terrorist that threatened Victor Von Doom’s career, as well as his life.” Possible mentioned. “So not only did one Possible give you leverage on that mission, but another did as well.”

“Well, Dr. Possible,” Fury said, “Seeing as how you have a history with chemistry, I should inform you that we could be dealing with another chemical mess as we speak.”

“What chemical mess?” Possible asked, and he remembered what his life told him about the Gamma radiation being used for Scooter’s operation. “You mean the Gamma Chamber? Oh, you boys have nothing to worry about there. It’s harmless.”

“Yeah, it’s harmless now.” Ross remarked. “But as soon as the boy they’re putting into it gets out…well, let’s just say that Bruce Banner won’t be the only one turning green whenever he’s angry or outraged.” Hearing that made Sadie feel very worried; she ran towards the doors to the surgery room and was about to go through them, until Betty and Mrs. Dr. Possible came out with Scooter in tow to the surprise of Fury, Ross, and their men.

“Oh, honey!” Sadie shouted, embracing her son tightly, almost smothering him. “Are you alright?” Scooter just smiled at his mother, just as she let go of him.

“I’m terrific, Mom.” Scooter said, honestly. “In fact, once I stepped out of that Gamma Chamber, I felt like a new gofer!” Ross and Fury couldn’t believe what they were hearing. When Betty noticed them standing in the waiting room, she became really disappointed and upset.

“The little guy was a real trooper.” Mrs. Dr. Possible said, as she stood near her husband. “He didn’t even complain once about the stitches in his stomach, as soon as he stepped out of that chamber.”

“That’s because the stitches, not to mention the pain that I’ve been feeling for months, are gone!” Scooter exclaimed, just before he lifted his shirt up and revealed his stomach, which didn’t have a single scar on it. “The Gamma radiation is a real lifesaver! I’d recommend this treatment for every patient here!” Fury and Ross felt really sheepish about the whole bust; they were standing there, armed and ready for no apparent reason.

“Betty…uh…we didn’t know that…” Ross stammered, but Betty didn’t give him the chance to explain himself.

“Save it, Dad.” She said. “You know, before you and your platoon busted in here and ran the place, I was going to call you and say that I finally got the Nanorobotics Project successful, without any help whatsoever. I was going to take the credit. I was going to tell everyone that Betty Ross worked her butt off to make sure a boy’s liver was working properly again, thanks to the Gamma-radiated nanomeds she put in him.” Betty was tearing up more and more as she spoke to her father. “But now…now that you’ve done what you did…I’m giving the credit to Bruce Banner, because he is the one that’s responsible the development of this technology. It was his idea to balance the amount of Gamma radiation that we used to activate the nanomeds.” Her directed her attention away from Ross and towards Fury. “So, if I were S.H.I.E.L.D., I would forget about this stupid mission and leave Bruce Banner alone!!”

Fury was indeed about to cancel the mission right there and then, until he suddenly noticed an image of Bruce Banner himself on an overhead television set. It wasn’t long before everyone else took notice as well, including Scooter and Sadie, who both became very upset. The nurse turned up the volume on the set, and when Sadie and Scooter heard Skeeter’s voice in the background, they immediately dashed out of the room. Fury, Ross, and their men had soon followed them, and then it was finally the Possibles and Betty, who was the most confused one out of the group.

“Why is he doing this?” She asked. “Why is he doing this?!?!”

Skeeter had a liver operation too? *raises an eyebrow* Interesting. Can you PM me, or post here, your thoughts on that scene when you wrote it? It seems a little out of kilter for what I created in the stories. It's cool, and it makes sense, and on top it all it's your story anyways. XD Just....I'm curious now.

Now that...is REALLY out of character. ....I mean....

I would NEVER think that Sadie would even think that!! She hated....oh wait, she never actually put them up for adoption...it was out of her hands. Oh well. XD Still your thoughts on that scene would be wonderful MuppetWriter!

I'm really glad you're enjoying the story, Renee. It'll probably be one of the shortest "MM" stories that I'll do, with only two or three (or maybe even four) more chapters left to write. I've got some other ideas that I want to get out, like the sequel to the Muppets/Spidey crossover that I did back in August, which will include "Muppet movie" characters like Jenny from MTM and Nick Holiday from GMC; and Kermit will also be reunited with old friend, Mickey Mouse, in the story as well (you can't have the "MM" without MM). Then there's the Muppets/DC comics story that I have planned, which will just be one whole story instead of a series like "MM", and it'll include characters from my favorite show, "Scooby-Doo".

Anyway, back to the Muppets/Hulk story....

In the "Marvelous Muppets" universe, Skeeter had one before Scooter, but her physician wasn't Bruce Banner...it was Reed Richards (a.k.a. "Mr. Fantastic" of the Fantastic Four). Her surgery was handled by him soon after the incident that changed him, Sue, Johnny, and Ben forever, which pretty much gave Reed the leverage to handle the surgery by himself, with his elasticity and everything.

When I wrote that part, I reminded myself that I wasn't going to connect this story with yours in any way, because I wanted your series to stand alone and be perfect like it has been for the longest time. Yet I wanted to keep the spirit of the "Sadie" stories, so I put a little spin on things. I just alternated the one story where the life of Scooter was traded with Nancy's, and she died soon after his operation. I just put Skeeter into Scooter's place for the history of the "Marvelous Muppets" world.

I'll be glad when I finish studying up more on Marvel Comics' "Ghost Rider" series, because I want to take this sub-plot to a whole new level.

That was yet another nod to your stories. In this universe, Sadie never gave up her children, so joking about adoption wouldn't be so hard for her, since she raised Skeeter and Scooter ever since they were infants. She didn't raise them alone either. The father is still somewhere out there, and I'll give you a hint: He's one of Marvel's best superheroes.

....*faints*

OMG.

You...and the....Nancy....and...Skeeter....

*faints again* Oh my goodness...

Wait. *raises a curious eyebrow now* Okay. It makes sense why Skeeter had one before Scooter. A liver operation I mean. But....then why would Nancy die? The only reason she died in my story was because she put her soul in place for Scooters. Eli wanted Scoot's soul, and because Death already had a place in "paradise" for a soul, he needed something or someone's soul. Nancy gave herself up for him. So he wouldn't have to die. Now....I just wondering why Nancy had to die now...or was it instead that Eli was after her as well?

Your thoughts would be appreicated.

Okay, 2nd part.

I'm pretty much stupid on DC/Marvel characters. I honestly only know what I know from the TV: Spiderman cartoon, Superman show (the one with Tara....and Dean Cain), the old Hulk show from the 70's. That's really all I know of these universes. I've NEVER read the comics with any regularity. I think I read one huge crossover some friend had on the bus one day, and that was it.

Oh yeah, I've also seen the X-Men cartoon, and one of the X-Men movies. And I know a little bit about the Fantastic Four cause of the movie and some old cartoons.

I don't know which character goes to which.

I'm thinking....Superman? Batman? Spiderman perhaps? *shrugs shoulders* I've honestly no clue.

A hint would be appericated. I'm just dense ya know.

Mrs. Dr. Possible chuckled as she glanced at Scooter’s stomach.

“This little fella sure has one cute belly.” She said.
I giggled when I read that line.

“And Scooter Grosse plus Gamma radiation equals…” Fury said, and he stopped when both generals’ eyes widen in shock, realizing the consequences to Scooter’s operation.

Okay, what's kinda funny about that is this: I'd be more scared of Sadie becoming Hulk actually. XD Oh, and if this might help you, I found a quiz a friend of mine was doing on DeviantART, and I created a quiz for Sadie's character.

Read the current journal and it will tell you a good bit about Sadie's character, that possibly wasn't used in the story.

About the slightly-gimpy legs thing that I never actually mentioned? I just plain forgot. That was one of things on my mind when I created her character. She had to have deep seated....anger....or something like that. I just thought...well...for her to be seen unfit as a mother of twins, it had to be a little bit more then she was just a young girl! ...that fire had damaged her somewhat.

The same thing happened in this universe. The only difference is that it was Skeeter and not Scooter who Nancy gave herself up for.

You get your information the same way I get mine...from television and movies. I only know about 50% of who these characters are, what they stand for, where they live, how they live their lives, and their recent status in the comic world now. It also helps when your older brother is a huge comic book fan and has an arsenal of comics in his closet.

I really want to get to know "Ghost Rider", sometime before his movie comes out next year, because I want to do a story that puts Eli, Death, Nancy, and all of the supernatural characters that you included in your "Sadie" stories in this particular one, with subplots of Blade (Marvel Comics' famous vampire-hunter) and the W.I.T.C.H. girls (see "Marvelous Muppets: X-Men Mark The Spot").

It's okay. I understand.

DC Comics: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, the Justice League of America, and a lot of other characters who you wouldn't know.

Marvel Comics: Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Ghost Rider, Blade, The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and...whew!...I'll be here all day if I name them all.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Renee. I really learned a lot, especially the info about her husband, Richard Hunt. For a minute, I thought that he was never mentioned in the series; but I remembered that he was mentioned in the BTTF crossover.

I'm glad that I learned this, because now I'm not afraid to make Sadie's husband be human...and not just any human, but a Marvel Superhero! Everyone should find out who he is by the end of this Hulk/Muppets story, which will led on to a story based on that particular subplot.

I should warn you ahead of time that I might alternate a few characteristics of the Sadie character, Renee, just like I'm alternating who her husband will be. I should also tell you some other stories that I might include your "Sadie" characters in: the Blade/Ghost Rider/Muppets story, the Daredevil/Muppets story, and the Ultimate Avengers/Muppets story. I'll label these stories as the Marvelous Sadie ones.

Chapter Seven: Somebody's In Trouble

Bruce had no idea that he was being interviewed by the ambitious and careless young woman. He thought that he was just having a regular conversation with her, which was why he didn’t hold back his personal thoughts about General Ross, Nick Fury, and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agency. The conversation was being broadcasted in front of at least a hundred people in the studio, as well as over the radio, being heard by several San Francisco citizens, including Scooter and Sadie (who were heading towards the KMUP station in their van).

“Why would your sister do such a reckless thing?!” Sadie exclaimed. “Doesn’t see realize that Banner’s career, not to mention his freedom, could be at stake!”

“I can’t believe she would go behind our backs like that, especially after we warned her not to for Dr. Banner’s sake!” Scooter shouted, and the angrier he had become, the more he felt something weird inside of him. Sadie noticed the weird look on his face and the way he clenched onto his stomach.

“What’s wrong, honey?” Sadie asked, keeping both her eyes on Scooter and the road at the same time. “Is it the nanomeds?”

“I’m not sure.” Scooter said. “Dr. Ross said that I shouldn’t feel them after the operation.” Sadie’s anger had ceased, and she became increasingly worried about her son’s health. Was the operation as much of a success as Dr. Ross claimed it was? That question plagued her mind, as they continued to listen to the conservation between Skeeter and Bruce, which was getting more personal by the second.

General Ross is a mindless *******!” Bruce exclaimed, and he sounded as if he was desperately controlling his anger as he spoke. “No wonder our country is in jeopardy! Because there are mindless jerks like him leading our brave troops into meaningless wars!” Ross and Fury were listening to Bruce’s comments in their chopper, which was flying over Alcatraz and towards the Golden Gate Bridge.

Do you think the same about Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.?” Skeeter inquired.

Nick Fury’s different from Ross in so many ways.” Bruce replied. “He’s more tactical and has a worthy agency to work with.” For a moment, Fury was honored by Bruce’s comments about him and his organization, until…“That was until I realized the truth about them. After the creation of the Avengers, Fury became so cocky that he failed to keep a promise that he made to me, when I first joined S.H.I.E.L.D.

What was it?” Skeeter asked, and Fury closed his eyes tightly, silently praying that Bruce wouldn’t have the guts to say what he figured he was going to say on air.

Have the government take General Ross out of the military, so I could work on the Nanorobotics Project without him constantly watching over my shoulder.” Banner said, and everyone in San Francisco, including the audience in the KMUP station, gasped in shock at the sudden news. In the chopper, Ross glared at Fury, and Fury just took his glare without a sense of intimidation; neither of the two men said a word to each other, as they neared the KMUP station.

Why did Ross fail to keep his promise?” Skeeter said.

Because Ross was funding the army that Fury needed to back up his Avengers team.” Bruce said. “When that army included a scientist by the name of Dr. James Timothy Possible, that’s when I was removed out of the agency, with nothing left but my intelligence to start on the Nanorobotics Project.” In the audience at the KMUP station, Kim was surprised to find out that her father not only worked for the military, but for the S.H.I.E.L.D. agency as well.

“Man, Kim!” Ron commented. “Just when I figured you were the only one involved with an agency led by a one-eyed character.”

Meanwhile, outside of the KMUP station, Sadie and Scooter had arrived and parked right near the front entrance. Sadie was the first one to jump of the vehicle, while Scooter was still suffering from abdominal pains that were far worse than the ones he had before his first liver operation. She helped him out of the van and was careful not to rush him.

“It’s alright, Mom.” Scooter said, softly. “I’m fine.” He gently broke away from the soft hold that Sadie had on him, and he climbed up the steps, moving through the double doors and into the station, with his mother following close behind. The first place they headed into was backstage, where Clifford, Piggy, and Rizzo were watching the interview on yet another television monitor. Clifford and Rizzo were enjoying every minute of the show, figuring it was pulling up ratings to one hundred percent, while Piggy seemed aggravated, knowing that the program was a waste of time without her in it.

“Oh, man!” Rizzo exclaimed. “You gotta give Skeet credit for pulling this off!”

“We are so in the zone!” Clifford commented. “There’s no way ABC will pull us off the air now. Man, I wouldn’t be surprised if KMUP became a national network. We should’ve thought of this idea a long time ago.”

“And what is that supposed to mean?!” Piggy retorted. “I had this station in check, long before we put Dr. Jekyll here on the air! I was the one who ruled airwaves! Kelly Ripa ain’t got nothin’ on me!” Johnny Fiama and Sal were passing through, just as they heard Piggy make her comment.

“What did you say?” Sal asked her, and he put some attitude in his voice. “What did you say?!?!” Piggy got up in the monkey’s face, acting just as tough as he was.

“You heard me, banana-breath!!!” She shouted. “I was the one who made the television set get hot, sold out all of the tickets, and put the butts in the seats! Moi did it! Not some green-faced brute!”

“Johnny Fiama is not some green-faced brute!” Sal yelled.

“I wasn’t talkin’ about him, Neanderthal!” Piggy shouted, just as Johnny noticed Bruce Banner on the screen and got very scared.

“Y-You…You brought him on the show?!” Johnny exclaimed. “Are you nuts?! I mean, are you people just downright insane?!?!”

“Hey, relax, J.F.” Clifford said. “It’s just his human side. Skeeter doesn’t intend on making him mad.”

“Yeah, he ain’t mad now.” Johnny said. “But…B-But what if he does?”

“He won’t.” Someone said, and they all turned to see Scooter and Sadie in the backstage area, both with furious looks on their faces. Scooter brought a walkie-talkie to his face and spoke into it. “Harry…shut off the program.” In the control box, Crazy Harry was operating the controls, and he laughed maniacally as he yanked a plug from the wall, causing a small flash of electricity and brought static across all of the radios and television sets in San Francisco. The audience in the KMUP station booed over the “Technical Difficulties” message that was flashing on the large monitor in front of them.

“Hey! What gives?” Ron asked. “We didn’t even get to see him turn green!”

Meanwhile, near the roof of the KMUP station, Ross’s chopper was in the process of landing on the rooftop. Inside, Ross and Fury noticed how the radio broadcast of Skeeter’s interview with Bruce had been cut off, leaving nothing but static playing over KMUP’s station. They assumed that the broadcasters had detected their presence, so they loaded their weapons and prepared for the worse.

“Boys, let’s keep in mind that there are civilians in the building, so try not to risk any casualties.” Ross ordered. “We’re only here to take Banner under custody, not start a war.”

“If he turns green, Ross, then he’ll be the one starting the war.” Fury contradicted, and Ross glared at him again, not forgetting the surprise that he heard over the radio moments ago.

“The only words that I want to hear from your mouth are ‘You are under arrest, Dr. Banner’.” Ross told him. “Understood?” Fury didn’t acknowledge his demand; he instead just glared right back at him, as both them and their men climbed out of the chopper and charged into the building.

In the storage room of the KMUP studio, Skeeter wasn’t aware that her conversation with Bruce was no longer airing live on television or radio. She just kept asking him questions, and he just kept answering them, as she—at certain times during the discussion—glanced at her watch to see if an hour (the show’s regular air time) had passed. When Bruce realized that was the twenty-sixth time she glanced at her watch, he became suspicious.

“What’s going on, Skeet?” He asked, and Skeeter got a little nervous, trying not to seem like she had been caught.

“What do you mean?” She asked back.

“Usually when someone glances at their watch between every couple of minutes, that means they’ve planned for the conversation to last a certain number of minutes, maybe even for a full hour.” Bruce said. “And the way you ask more questions than you make comments, especially when those questions pertain to my feud with Ross and S.H.I.E.L.D.” Skeeter knew that she was caught, but she was quick to cover it up.

“I was just curious.” She said, and Bruce stared at her for a long moment, as if he knew what the truth was. “I think I better check to see how the others are handling tonight’s show.” As soon as Skeeter reached for the doorknob, the door itself had flung open and Betty came in with Sadie and the Possibles.

“Bruce! Are you alright?” Betty asked, and Bruce was very surprised to see her there.

“I’m fine.” He said. “How did you know I was here?”

“My daughter had your mug and your voice broadcasted on television and radio sets everywhere.” Sadie said, just before she snatched the Muppets Tonight pin from Skeeter’s sweater and tossed it over to Bruce. “And she used this to do it.” Bruce caught the pin and saw that it was actually a hidden camera; he looked over at Skeeter, disappointed but not angry.

“Why, Skeet?” He asked her, as she was on the verge of tears.

“I just wanted to keep the show from being canceled.” Skeeter replied. “I just wanted to help, Dr. B.” Bruce just smiled at her, impressed by her optimism and gung-ho persona.

“Skeeter! This is not helping, honey!” Sadie exclaimed. “Do you know who was at the hospital during Scooter’s operation? General “Thunderbolt” Ross and S.H.I.E.L.D.! And because they saw the broadcast on the clinic’s television set, they know where Bruce is.” The smile on Bruce’s face had slowly faded when he heard that news.

“They’re coming here?” He asked.

“Yes, Bruce.” Betty said. “That’s why we have to get you out of here.” Bruce looked down at the hidden camera pin in his hands, and he set it down on top of a nearby storage box. He got up from the box that he was sitting on and headed out of the room with Betty, Sadie, Skeeter, and the Possibles.

Meanwhile, the KMUP audience was getting rowdier by the minute, chanting the Hulk’s name over and over again for the second time. Ron was joining in on the chant, and so was Rufus, while Kim just remained silent, wondering if something bad might’ve happened to shut down the program. The audience suddenly fell silent, as Clifford came out onto the stage and addressed them.

“Hey, everybody.” Clifford said. “Now, I know that you wanted to see the Hulk this evening, and ya probably even wanted to find out where this interview was going. But, because of some unforeseen technical difficulties, we won’t be seeing the conclusion of the Hulk interview.” The unpleasant news made the audience boo even louder than before, and even brought a few people to throw vegetables at Clifford. “Oh, come on now! You wouldn’t do this to Kermit the Frog if here we here…and I wish he was!”

In the backstage area, the pains in Scooter’s stomach had risked their peak, and he suffered tremendously as he leaned against a wall, while Rizzo, Piggy, Johnny, and Sal were watching Clifford dodge the tomatoes, potatoes, cabbages, and other vegetables that were being hurled directly at him. They were impressed that he could move that fast when it came to keeping his clothes stainless. Rizzo was the one who was enjoying Clifford’s abuse the most.

“Hey! This is more entertainin’ than that lame Hulk interview.” Rizzo commented, and as all of the other Muppets had shown up at the scene, Rizzo spoke to Crazy Harry over the walkie-talkie. “Hey, Hare, are we gettin’ this?”

Oh, yeah! This is blastin’ through airwaves everywhere!” Crazy Harry exclaimed, chuckling maniacally. “And speakin’ of blast…” The Muppets immediately reacted when they heard him say that.

“Harry! No!” They shouted, just as a huge explosion erupted from the control box and all of the lights in the station went off. Some of the people in the audience were screaming; the entire interior of the station was momentarily darkened, until the backup generator switched on the blue emergency lights. Clifford had joined the Muppets backstage, with only a few stains on his clothes.

“Hey, where were you guys, man?!?!” Clifford exclaimed, furiously. “I was doin’ more flips than Spider-Man out there!” Before any of the crew could’ve answered his question, a loud, monstrous moan emerged behind them; they turned and faced a spot in the backstage area that was not illuminated by the emergency lights, leaving it totally dark. When Clifford remembered that Scooter was standing in that very spot, he got very concerned. “Hey, Scoot? You okay, man?” There was no reply, and Clifford was forced to grab a nearby flashlight; when he shine its light on the dark spot where Scooter supposedly stood, someone (or something) roared at the horrified Muppet crew.

Meanwhile, Bruce was running down a partially darkened hallway with Betty, Sadie, Skeeter, and the Possibles and heading towards the backstage area. They were soon stopped by some lights that were shining over their heads, and they turned to see Ross, Fury, and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents behind them. Two of the agents were holding up large flashlights that blinded Bruce, Betty, Sadie, Skeeter, and the Possibles as they stared at the group.

“It’s over, Banner.” Fury said. “It’s the end of the line from here.” Bruce didn’t panic over the situation; he just had a very serene look on his face.

“So it would seem, General Fury.” He uttered, as Ross started to walk towards Betty, holding a hand out to her.

“Betty,” He said, “Come with me.” Betty just backed away and got closer to Bruce, as Ross moved closer to her.

“I won’t let your men take him.” She refused, and Ross was becoming angry.

“Get away from him, Betty.” Ross said. “He’s…”

“Dangerous?!” Betty exclaimed. “So are you!!” Ross angrily grabbed Betty’s right arm, at the same time Dr. Possible took out a small pen and pressed a button on it that unleashed a bright flash from one end of it that blinded Ross, Fury, and their agents. As they were trying to regain their sight, Sadie and Skeeter jumped onto Ross and Fury, pinning them to the floor, while the Possibles did the same to the agents. Betty, free from Ross’s grasp, turned her attention to Bruce. “Run! Get out of here before they find you!” Bruce did as Betty told him and he continued running down the hallway.

When Bruce reached the backstage area, he stopped dead in his tracks as soon as he saw what the Muppet crew had been staring at for minutes. In the middle of the room was an seven-foot tall, orange, scaly monster with dark orange hair, sharp red claws that were at least two feet long, and a section of his abdomen that was made out of glass and showed its glowing green liver. It had razor sharp teeth and eyes that glowed in a greenish color. But the thing that caught Bruce’s attention the most was the ripped jeans that it wore and the shredded green jacket and yellow shirt that hung over its broad shoulders. Just from looking at those things, Bruce knew the creature was in fact Scooter Grosse.

“Oh, God.” Bruce uttered, and as soon as Scooter spotted him, he took his large, scaly hand and smacked him, sending him flying right into a nearby wall. The Muppets Tonight crew ran out of sight, while Scooter crashed his way to the stage and let out of abominable roar towards the horrified audience. Several people began running out of the building, while Ron stood up and cheered.

“Aw, man!” He shouted. “IT’S THE HULK! IT’S THE HULK!”

“Ron! That’s not the Hulk!” Kim yelled.

“It isn’t?” Ron said, and once he realized that the Hulk is green and not orange, he screamed and ran out of the station with everyone else. Kim, who was the only one left in the stands, looked closely at the creature and almost recognized it.

“Scooter?” She murmured, and when the creature leaped towards her, she gasped in fear and dodged out of the way, just in time for the creature to crash through a wall and end up outside, crashing onto the side. It picked up a parked car and hurled it into the air, making it crash against the side of a building and fall far to the ground, exploding in the process. Kim rushed outside the station and watched the creature begin its rampage through the streets, while several innocent bystanders were desperately trying to get out of the way. She noticed a news van pulling up to the scene, which was soon turned upside down by the creature. Kim watched helplessly as the creature pounded the vehicle, disfiguring it. “This is not good.”

Suddenly, there was another horrendous roar that echoed throughout the night air, but it didn’t come from the creature. That’s when another giant figure leapt through the hole in the side of the KMUP station and soared high across the air. When it landed right near the creature, the citizens of San Francisco were surprisingly pleased to see that it was the Hulk, who stood at a whopping eleven feet (four feet taller than Scooter’s creature was). He glared down at Scooter, as one of the most devastating battles commenced on the street.
