Their first appearance was actually not even nationally aired.
It was on the ORIGINAL Sesame Street pilot episode that was shown in July of 1969 (not the famous November 1969 pilot shown on Noggin), and only shown to 100 families who were paid by CTW to watch a week's worth of test shows on a UHF station in Pennsylvania.
Ernie and Bert were the only Muppets on the show and did not interact with the humans....That is, until test audiences found them the only redeeming quality of the shows.
And you're right, Ernie and Bert's first sketch was the "two noses" one.
