It's actually there to cure fury, which can be inflicted by enemy attacks. Drinking it in while not furious inflicts sadness. Enemies can also inflict it but I forgot which ones.

Or would you rather I'd peel an onion knight?

This really does seem ridiculous. Is it working? All I can see is purple...like I was looking through a bottle of purple juice...
