I've always interpetted it as

AH AH AH AH AH!

But if you've read enough SS books it would be printed as


HA HA HA HA HA!

So what does everyone else think?

I second that. Though based on how I've heard him laugh, he sometimes goes, "Ha-haa!" A sort of shorter laugh. Kinda like Fozzie's trademark, "Aaah" (escalating in pitch) after he hears or says something amusing.

I would definatly say Ah ah ah! The H stops each word before the next starts. With Ha ha ha, it tends to be read more like hahahahahahah!

I guess it's worth going outside and trying both...whichever leads to thunder and lightng is evidently correct!

Voicing and writing are different

The Count's laugh is Ah Ah Ah, but when writing books for children, especially educational ones it is important that all spelling be uniform. Therefore ha ha ha, which is the standard way of writing down the sound one makes when laughing, is his written laugh, Ah, on the other hand is a standard way of writing down a voiced sigh. Hee hee hee is also used as a laughing sound in the dictionary and therefore it is used for Ernie's trademark laugh.
