No... There's no one method that will ever prove to 100% effectively block all spammers. But maybe if Phil takes some of the recommendations I suggested to him in one of our moderator threads, that would help cut down on the number of spambots I have to daily rid from the system, especially when we're getting multiples from the same ones over and over. :grouchy: :attitude:

Took care of it... But that's not just 1 spammer, that person has created at least 5 spam accounts I've banned, all with the word "press" as the first part of their name, registered with a "google.mail" address. So stay on the lookout for that person. Also, just logged on to my computer... Eight new members, all spammers.

Claudia! Woooohoooo!
:excited: I saw your name and I let out a squeal! Even though it's offtopic, (sorry Ed), and even though I've never posted here before, I had to come in and say hey!

Count, what exactly is the point of spamming? What kind of damage could they do?

Well... Let's put it this way...

We'd be inundated with people who'd have accounts for the sheer simplicity of the fact that they "can" create the accounts and have them registered. Is MC a place that you'd want taken down because of the clutter of these spambots be left with open access to the forums? Would you like navigating MC, knowing you can't even log on because the influx of spammers who've been given free access has crashed the system, causing Phil to have to take the forum offline while dealing with the problem only to have it happen again and again? If we didn't ban these members who are spammers, there'd be a ton of porn tape threads in the Puppetry Improv area of the forum. Is MC the proper place to host materials of that nature? Also, there'd be inappropriate ads posted in almost every thread, from those selling shoes in the Feedback section to others asking what snowmobile you'd buy in Fraggle Rock to nonsensical stringing of letters in the Classic Sesame folder to people pushing drugs or other spam URL links in the General Discussion area. Would you be annoyed by the time it'd take wading through all of these posts to get to those of true substance? All of these are reasons that we need to be on the watch for and boot spammers from the forums. It does take me some time going through each new member to decide if after a glance they're spammers or not, but it has to be done. Though there are steps that could be taken to lessen the number of spammers who register daily, that's up to Phil himself to implement.

Hope this helps answer your question somewhat. :batty: :wisdom:

I think I got it and a huge thank you for doing what you do. This is by far the cleanest forum I have ever been in and now I understand that is because of your hard work. From all of us serious MC posters, THANK YOU!
