It's kind of like how Mickey Mouse was created way back in 1928. Since I was born in the 70's, I learned to like Mickey Mouse and his friends from books and his classic films from TV specials. Instead of going to movie theaters which people seemed to do if they wanted to see new Mickey cartoons. It was the same thing with the classic Looney Tunes. I first saw them on TV, instead of the movies.

The Muppet Show first aired when I was 5. And I recognized Kermit from Sesame Street when I first saw it. At first I wondered if this was some kind of late night Sesame Street. Then I found out it was something different, but enjoyable.

You can't expect people to recognize names like Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, Dave Goelz, or Kevin Clash. Most of the world doesn't know who these people are. They know Scooter, The Count, Gonzo and Elmo. Most people know who Jim Henson is because his name is always connected to Kermit and the Muppets. "Jim Henson's Muppets." But for the most part people don't know who the performers are because we never see them and we aren't watching them. We are watching the performance of Rowlf playing his piano.

The same people that feverishly defend the modern Muppet productions are sad about this sort of thing. Its all connected folks...

Serious or not, little kids should be able to recognize Kermit and Big Bird
