I was just listenin' to "I Was Going To St. Ives" by The Anything Muppets on MC Radio, and I decided to calculate "how many were going the other way".

Well, the girl Muppet proclaims that "2,801" people were not going to St. Ives.

BUT SHE'S WRONG!!!

According to my calculator, 7x7x7x7 = 2,401

She had 4 too many!

EEK!

Now I'm scared to know if SS has LIED to me before! Wh--what other false ideas am I followin' that I don't know about?!

You multiplied all those sevens, you just didn't add everything!

Look at the song:

And every wife had seven sacks
Every sack had seven cats
Every cat had seven kittens
Kittens, cats, sacks, wifes
How many were going to St. Ives?

Okay. There's one man. Seven wives.
Each wife has 49 cats, making it a total of 343 cats.
343 times 7 kittens equals 2401 kittens.

Adding it together, that makes 2752 people going to St. Ives.

Still wrong you say. BUT - somehow Muppets consider sacks as being people too. So if you add the 7x7=49 sacks, that makes... 2801. CORRECT!

Geez, and this comes from someone who claims to be awful at maths!

7x7x7x7 = wives, sacks, cats, kittens = 2,401 + 1 man now = 2,402.

Where the heck are you gettin' the other 399?!?

If you add an extra 49, you get 2,450. I counted the sacks in my first equation. I had 4 7s, to represent "Kittens, cats, sacks, wives", which is 2,401, plus the single man which is 2,402.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND!!!

Plus, I did that right before I went to bed, and I'm doin' this right after I woke up (I ain't even brushed no teeth yet).
