Season 7: A hot day on Sesame Street

Sponsors: H, S, 3


Scene 1: The adults are in Hooper’s Store with the air conditioning on full blast. David is clad in a bucket hat, T-shirt, and shorts. Maria is clad in a tank top & shorts, and fanning herself. Susan is wearing a loose shirt & skirt, and Gordon is in a dashiki. All of them are drinking glasses of water. Big Bird looks through the window and pants: “H...H is for HOT!” David opens the window and invites Big Bird inside. Big Bird nods and says to the camera, “H...H is for Hurray!” He quickly enters the store and escapes the heat as the adults welcome him.

Cartoon: H is for Hair

Muppets: Bert tries to write a letter to Mr. Rogers, but Ernie turns on the electric fan and bothers him with it. Bert blows up and says he’s “hot and bothered,” and Ernie has just the thing for him: more cool air!

Film: This is the desert…

Scene 2: Cookie Monster (in a sun visor and apron) attempts to sell fresh-squeezed cookie juice. Maria and David are hesitant at first, but they each agree to buy a cup for five cents. It turns out that Maria doesn’t like it at all, but David does...so he finishes her cup. Cookie: “Another satisfied customer, and another one not so much. Welp, c’est la vie.”

Muppets: The Anything Muppet children cooperate to sell lemonade

Scene 3: Oscar and Grover discuss why they like the hot weather. Oscar likes the muggy, humid conditions but Grover likes drinking cool water and sunbathing. They get into an argument, and Grover tersely says, “Can you think of ONE thing that I like about the heat that YOU like as well?” Oscar finally admits that he likes using fans. Grover assumes that Oscar likes using fans to stay cool and relaxed. To his surprise, Oscar pulls out a giant electric fan: “Who said anything about staying cool? I like using fans to blow away people if they hang around my trash can for too long!” Oscar turns on the powerful fan which blows Grover away.

Scene 4: Gordon and Susan overhear Oscar shouting, “Free water! Get some free water from your pal Oscar!” When asked for an explanation, Oscar says that he’s giving out free water to the locals. The adults are surprised that Oscar is doing such a kind thing, but Oscar downplays it and tells them to wait ten seconds. After counting to 10, Oscar still hasn’t brought their water. So Gordon and Susan peer into the can, and get a faceful of water. Oscar (snarkily): “There’s your water, folks! Hope you’re finally feeling nice and cool and refreshed. Now buzz off!”

Muppet/Kid Moment: Grover and Debo talk about the letter S

Cartoon: S is for Sing

Film: The Mad Painter #3

Scene 5: Maria, David, and Big Bird play “One of These Things” with three pairs of sunglasses and a pair of sandals.

Cartoon: A clam tells a fisherman why he’s not catching any fish - he pulled out all the plants and the fish can’t survive…

Muppets: The Count’s bats go on strike

Scene 6: Everyone is sitting around tiredly. Susan thinks they’ve done everything to beat the heat, but David remembers one last thing they haven’t done - gone to a pool. Gordon tells David the nearest pool is ten blocks away, but David says that there’s a kiddie pool in the garage! He excitedly leaves to get it and asks Gordon to get a hose. Susan and Maria retrieve the pool toys.

Cartoon: Jazz Spies #3 (repeat)

Scene 7: The pool has been filled with water, and the adults and the kids play in the kiddie pool. Grover and Oscar announce the sponsors. SS sign still: Maria. CTW sign still: Bob.

Season 8: Oscar’s hot-air balloon

Sponsors: M, Z, 10


Scene 1: Oscar is in an especially grouchy mood. Susan steps out of 123 Sesame Street and says good morning to Oscar, to which Oscar snaps, “Take a hike, Smiley.” Luis says hello, and Oscar sneers, “Hey Fix-It Face, why don’t you make like a drum and beat it?” Then Bob greets Oscar cheerfully, causing Oscar to lose his cool: “Buzz off, you overgrown vocal cord! Just leave me alone for once!” Bob scolds Oscar for giving him a rude reply to his nice greeting. Oscar says that he’s sick and tired of all the cheerful smiling neighbors who “only know how to say, ‘Good morning Oscar! Good morning Oscar!’ It’s all I ever hear, and I’ve had enough.” Bob tells Oscar that his rotten attitude will not put a stop to the others’ cheerfulness. Oscar dramatically vows to do something about his situation and retreats into his trash can.

Scene 2: The adults notice a giant wall surrounding Oscar’s trash can area. A sign reads, “DANGER! GROUCHES AT WORK - DO NOT ENTER. THIS MEANS YOU.” Oscar refuses to tell them what he’s working on, but he hints that it will help him get from one place to another.

Film: Footage of animals and people bathing or playing in water

Scene 3: The adults and kids see that Oscar has attached a giant hot air balloon to his trash can. He asks Bob and Luis to take four sandbags out of his can, which will help lift him up into the air. Once everyone counts the sandbags, Oscar’s can slowly moves skyward! As Oscar says goodbye, Susan wonders if they’ll ever see him again.

Cartoon: An elevator operator goes up 10 floors, picking up more and more people and animals along the way. At the tenth floor, a mouse enters and the elevator explodes!

Cartoon: Pinball Number Count #10

Scene 4: Susan and Luis ask the kids about things they can find in the sky, and on the ground. The kids list “sky things” like birds, clouds, and airplanes; and they list “ground things” like ants, rocks, grass, and flowers.

Film/Song: David sings, “One of These Things” over footage of three starfish and a crab

Scene 5: Oscar floats in his hot-air balloon trash can. However, he becomes bothered by the sunshine, the blue sky, and the fluffy white clouds. Then a Muppet bird (a hot pink AM played by Jerry Nelson) passes by chirping cheerfully, which drives Oscar crazy. After realizing that there’s nobody to insult or even talk to, Oscar has a change of heart and decides to go home.

Cartoon: Jazz Spies #10

Muppets: Bert can’t go on a trip with Ernie because his hand is covered with purple paint. Ernie solves this by covering Bert’s hands with mittens...and then he puts a scarf and hat on him too. Then Ernie reveals that they’re going to the beach!

Film: A group of Asian children climb in and out of a tire

Cartoon: Miss Fortune makes guesses about a dog

Muppets: Biff hangs the correct numbers under Salvador Dada’s paintings in an art gallery

Insert: Gordon chides Big Bird for being fifteen minutes late, according to a clock outside the Fix-It Shop. Luis intervenes and says that the clock is broken, and that Big Bird was actually on time. Gordon apologizes to Big Bird for his mistake.

Everybody welcomes Oscar back, and Oscar admits that he would rather be on Sesame Street where he can be annoyed by his neighbors, “but being close to the landfill isn’t bad either!” As everyone leans in for a hug (to Oscar’s horror), Bob announces the sponsors. Mr. Hooper offers to serve her a drink at Hooper’s Store, while Susan and Bob watch for Madame’s limo to pull up.

Scene 5: Madame Schwartzhead gets a call saying that a limo won’t arrive for another hour. Madame is distraught, fearing that she’ll miss the show. Bob gets the idea for her to perform in the arbor as a “warm-up” before the performance at the Met!

Scene 6: Madame Schwartzhead happily comments on all the kind people on Sesame Street (Bob, Susan, Olivia, Mr. Hooper, Big Bird, and the kids). Oscar pops up and counters with a rude remark towards them. Madame realizes that every street has someone who’s less friendly than the others, and they sing about their different viewpoints.

Cartoon: A letter O rolls over and over a horse. Then the horse eats the O (animation by John Paratore)

Film: A little girl bangs on a piano, and she practices for many years to get better. At the end, she performs a recital.

Scene 7: Madame Schwartzhead performs a special operetta for the residents of Sesame Street. She sings about the friendly neighbors that she’s met, and how happy she is to know everyone on Sesame Street. After a huge ovation from the residents, Madame’s limo arrives and she says farewell. Scene 1: Luis welcomes the viewer while holding a wooden rocking horse. He’s bringing it over to Mrs. Singer’s apartment for her son. Just then, he gets lassoed by Rodeo Rosie who accuses him of stealing a live horse from the ranch. Luis tells Rosie that he doesn’t have a real horse and explains why the rocking horse isn’t alive. Rosie untangles Luis from her lasso, and he goes on his way. Then Rodeo Rosie spots David carrying a giant stuffed horse out of Hooper’s Store, and she swiftly lassoes him.

Upon their arrival, Oscar emerges and says he’s breaking the dishes to prepare for his special guests: his grandparents! Maria and Luis are surprised to learn that Oscar has an entire Grouch family, but Oscar says that his family is just like anybody else’s - loud, rude, messy, and argumentative! The adults tell Oscar that most families enjoy being together and don’t fight that often. A disheartened Oscar ends the conversation and goes to spread some chimney ash on the couch.

Scene 4: David writes on a notepad as Cookie Monster dictates his story. “Sir Cookie-lot” is about a daring young knight (Cookie) who must save the king and his daughter (Bob and Maria) from an evil sorcerer (Oscar). The knight is guided along his journey by a wise old man (David). The sorcerer tests the knight with a matching game involving cookies, which the knight completes. After devouring the cookies, the king and his daughter are released from captivity. The king offers to let the knight marry the princess, but the knight would rather eat more cookies instead! The angry sorcerer refuses to conjure up more cookies, so the knight eats the sorcerer’s wand and the stones in his lair! “And so the knight munched happily ever after. The end!”
