Season 7: Snow day arc #8 –Mumford’s rhyming trick/Digging out Gordon’s car

Scene 1: Susan and Gordon walk out of their apartment and see their car buried in snow. They leave to get some shovels to dig out their car.

Cartoon: A voice asks a face if it’s aware of the letter S, and it’s revealed that the face belongs to a snake (animation by the Hubleys)

Cartoon: S is for Snow, Santa, and Sleigh

Scene 2: Maria and David are helping out Gordon and Susan. Big Bird offers to help out, but he keeps bringing unuseful items such as a baseball mitt and a toothbrush. Finally, he brings Herry Monster, who pushes the car out of the snow by himself!

Scene 4: Maria, David, and the kids watch as the Amazing Mumford conjures up things that rhyme with snow: a bow, a crow, and some dough. He asks Oscar if he’d like to see the trick, and Oscar replies, “NO!” After Oscar repeats this several times, Mumford thanks him for saying something that rhymes with snow. A defeated Oscar groans and retreats into his trashcan.

The princess shows up with a glass slipper on her ear, a glove on her nose, and a pocketbook on her head. The Prince declares that he’s found his love!

Cartoon: A bully recites the alphabet to a mild-mannered gardener, who hits him in the face with a pie

Scene 5: Mr. Hooper and David serve a special lunch at Hooper’s Store. They have made ten grilled cheese sandwiches and ten bowls of tomato soup. After counting everything, they call to the street residents to come inside for lunch. Susan, Gordon, Maria, and five kids come in to eat.

Cartoon: STOP (moving colored STOP signs in fast-motion)

Muppets: Ernie has a question for Bert, but Bert is busy reading the newspaper. Ernie hums loudly and talks to Rubber Duckie until Bert gives in. Ernie then asks if he can borrow the newspaper.

Scene 2: David and Luis discover Oscar trying to start a junky snow blower. David suggests that Oscar should get it fixed, but Oscar refuses. Luis insists that they should give it a try, so Oscar lets Luis and David try to fix the snow blower.

Cartoon: A girl inflates a balloon in the shape of an “S”

Film: Shopping for soup ingredients

Scene 3: Luis and David are covered in soot and grease. They decide that Oscar’s snow blower is beyond repair, but Oscar wants them to keep going. When David points out how dirty he and Luis are, Oscar says, “Yeah, and you two have never looked better! You guys could always use a little extra dirt, anyway…”

Scene 6: Big Bird finds a newspaper inside Hooper’s Store and plans to shred it to represent snow. Mr. Hooper comes by and tells him that he has to pay for it first. Since Big Bird doesn’t have enough money for a newspaper, he can’t have it.

Muppets: Grover demonstrates near and far

Cartoon: A wagoner gets across a clearing by building a bridge out of his ox-cart and converting is back again (animation by Bruce Cayard)

Scene 7: Big Bird is disappointed that he can’t show what it looks like when it’s snowing. As he sulks, it begins to snow. David and Mr. Hooper tell Big Bird to look up, but Big Bird is too depressed. When the adults finally tell him that it’s snowing, Big Bird is delighted and plays in the snow with the kids.

Scene 1: Big Bird, Mr. Snuffleupagus, and the kids walk in the freshly fallen snow. They count all the things on Sesame Street that are covered in snow: Luis’s workbench, Mr. Hooper’s newsstand, the tire swing in the arbor area, the steps of Susan and Gordon’s apartment, Oscar’s trashcan, and the mailbox. Then they all return to Big Bird’s nest.

Muppets: Don Music and Kermit compose “Drive, Drive, Drive Your Car” to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”

Gordon and Susan leave for the supermarket, but once they’re gone, David overhears Snuffy talking to Big Bird!

Eventually, Oscar’s can freezes solid so that Oscar, Biff, and Sully can’t get out! Gordon runs to get a crowbar, while David gets an ice pick.

Scene 6: Biff, Sully, and Oscar have been rescued. The trashcan lid is mangled, but Oscar couldn’t be happier. Biff asks for a payment, so Oscar gives him a frozen stack of bills. Biff realizes that when it warms up, the bills will become soggy and worthless, which Oscar wants. But David points out that Biff could use a hair dryer to save the bills from ruin. Biff and Sully stroll off happily, while Oscar laments not having pulled a fast one on them.

Big Bird doesn’t know what a hammer does, so Gordon and Biff demonstrate by hammering a nail on a wooden plank. Big Bird gives the mailbox to Biff who goes off to repair it.

Film: The crosswalk light says, “WALK.”

Celebrity: Bill Cosby counts four kids, but one keeps hiding behind him

Muppets: At night, Ernie loudly drinks an imaginary glass of water to quench his thirst. An irritated Bert tells him to get a real glass of water. Afterwards, Ernie feels hungry so he noisily eats an imaginary peanut butter sandwich.

Cartoon: Z words – zip, zoom, zig, zag, zany, and zoo…

Muppets: Simon Soundman does a weather forecast on Kermit’s news program

Scene 1: Maria and Luis go to Hooper’s Store for some coffee, but Mr. Hooper isn’t there. Mr. Ortiz is running the store because Mr. Hooper is sick and David is visiting his grandmother. Mr. Ortiz is uncertain about how things will go because his English isn’t very good. He asks if Luis can help, but Luis reminds him that he has to open the Fix-It Shop. Mr. Ortiz asks Maria if she could help because she knows English and Spanish. Maria agrees and starts making coffee for Luis.

Muppets: Two Anything Muppet children have a conversation using letters of the alphabet

Film: A turtle swims in a tank (music by Joe Raposo)

Muppets: Ernie meets Bert’s brother Bart

Cartoon: The D Commercial

Scene 2: Super Grover crash-lands into Hooper’s Store and offers to help Mr. Ortiz find someone to help out. Mr. Ortiz tries to tell him that somebody is already helping, but Super Grover brings in several kids to help. Maria comes out from the back of the store, and Mr. Ortiz tells Grover that Maria is already helping out. Super Grover is disappointed that he didn’t help the situation, but Mr. Ortiz points out that Grover found several kids to serve food to.

Big Bird tastes it and is pleased with the results.

Scene 5: Cookie Monster comes in for some cookies. Mr. Ortiz teaches him how to count cookies in Spanish. After eating the cookies, Cookie Monster asks how to say “zero cookies” in Spanish.

Cartoon: A man presents the alligator, which starts with the letter A

Muppets: Ernie rushes over to Bert, speaking rapidly. Bert tells him to speak slower, and Ernie reveals that Bert’s bread is burning in the oven. Then Bert starts speaking rapidly, just like Ernie was before!

Cartoon: A boy builds a lock house, but a girl builds a Victorian house next to him!

Scene 6: Bert comes in and orders a bowl of plain oatmeal. Maria and Mr. Ortiz ask him if he’d like to try some other foods with his oatmeal, and Bert hesitantly agrees. Maria gets some brown sugar, and Mr. Ortiz gets some honey. Bert tries them separately, and enjoys them so much that he decides to eat only the brown sugar and honey, forgetting about the oatmeal!

Muppets: Kermit counts six Twiddlebugs

To thank her, Mr. Ortiz treats Maria to a traditional Spanish dinner at his apartment. As they walk home, Bert and Luis announce the sponsors in English and Spanish. SS sign still: Susan. Season 8: Herry Monster tries to be careful all day/Big Bird and Snuffy make paintings of each other

Scene 1: Big Bird and Mr. Snuffleupagus complete their paintings of each other and admire them. Big Bird leaves to show his painting to Luis and Gordon to prove Snuffy’s existence, but Snuffy leaves with his own painting to show his mommy. When Big Bird and the adults return, Snuffy and his painting are gone. Luis snidely compliments Big Bird’s painting of “your imaginary friend.”

Cartoon: A cloud blows things with an “F” sound

Muppets: Ernie over-prepares for his trip to Hooper’s Store. He brings an umbrella, sunglasses and suntan lotion, a flashlight, and winter clothing for all possible weather scenarios.

Cartoon: Two aliens admire an “AMOR” monolith

Film: A dolphin walks backwards on water

Cartoon: Frances Fairy names several “F” words

Scene 3: Big Bird is attempting to fly. Gordon tells him that some birds remain flightless, no matter how hard they try. Big Bird is discouraged, but Gordon reminds him that there are many things that he can do that other birds can’t. Big Bird becomes proud of his ability to draw, ride a unicycle, and say the alphabet while spinning in circles. His attempt to do the latter results in an off-screen crash.

Film: Birds on land

Muppets: Waiter Grover serves a sandwich, but Mr. Johnson points out that it’s missing several items from the picture on the menu. After repeated attempts, Grover finally gets it right…but Mr. Johnson’s lunch hour is over! Grover throws a fit in the kitchen.

Film: The Mad Painter #7

Cartoon: The alphabet appears in an animated box

Scene 4: While entering the Fix-It Shop, Herry Monster trips and knocks over some boxes. Luis and Gordon help him up and say that he should be more careful. Herry resolves to be less clumsy and avoid causing damage in the neighborhood.

Muppets: Lefty and his boss steal the Golden AN

Scene 5: Herry Monster tiptoes over to Hooper’s Store. David asks why he’s moving so slowly, and Herry explains that he’s trying to be more careful and not break anything. David commends him, and Herry asks for a glass of milk. David pours it, turns around, and accidentally spills the glass of milk onto the counter!

Muppets/Song: Chris and the Alphabeats perform, “Count It Higher”

Cartoon: Two arms hug the word “Love”

Film: Several people help a man whose car is stuck in the mud

Muppet/Kid Moment: Grover and John-John talk about love, and count one penny

Scene 6: Big Bird is struggling to carry two large bags of birdseed. Herry asks if he’d like some help, and Big Bird agrees. Herry takes one bag, while Big Bird takes the other. They cooperate to move the bags to Big Bird’s door. Big Bird is proud of Herry for not dropping the bag or making a mess.

Scene 7: Herry Monster has made it through the whole day without being clumsy or overly strong. As Herry leaves, he gives Gordon a bone-crushing hug, and slaps Luis’s back so hard that he falls over. Gordon: “Well, it was good while it lasted…” David announces the sponsors. SS sign still: Grover. CTW sign still: David.
