Scene Four
Location: Ernie and Bert's Living Room
Time: Shortly after Scene Three
At Rise: Ernie is sitting in his chair, resting his head on his hand, thinking. Kermit stands in the foreground.
Kermit: Now, this is Ernie, in case you didn't know already. Ernie lives in this little apartment along with his best friend, Bert. This is stuff you probably know already, but we like to keep everything covered. (to Ernie) Hey, Ernie, you look kinda sad, pal.
Ernie: Well... that's because I am kind of sad.
Kermit: (to audience) I'll let Ernie explain why that is to you folks in the audience. I have a long trip to get to the next scene.
Kermit exits.
Ernie: Even the narrator won't stay and talk to me. I'm not really all that sad. I just wish I had a game to play. And I wish I had someone around to play that game with.
A door slams.
Bert enters with a large bag of groceries.
Bert: Ernie! Oh, Ernie!
Ernie stands.
Ernie: (cheerfully) Oh, it's my good ol' buddy Bert! Hello, Bert!
Bert: Ernie, will you help me put the groceries away?
Ernie: No can do, Bert! Because you and I are going to play a great game!
Bert: ... Terrific.
Ernie: Now, Bert--
Bert: Ernie, I just really need you to help me put the groceries away. They're really - oof! - they're really heavy! Come on, Ernie.
Ernie: But we've gotta play a game, Bert!
Bert: Ernie!
Ernie:
(sung)
Somebody come and play!
Bert: What?
Ernie:
Somebody come and play today.
Bert: I really can't do this right now, Ernie. I have to put the--
Bert starts to walk away, but Ernie stops him.
Ernie:
Somebody come and
Smile the smiles,
And sing the song.
It won't take long.
Bert: Ernie!
Ernie:
Somebody come and play today.
Bert: Ernie, I really don't have time for this!
Ernie:
Somebody come and play.
Somebody come and
Play my way.
Somebody come and
Rhyme the rhymes,
And laugh the laughs.
It won't take time.
Bert: No!
Ernie:
Somebody come and play today.
Somebody come with me and
See the pleasure in the wind.
Somebody see the time is
Getting late to begin.
Somebody come and play.
Bert: Grrrr!
Ernie:
Somebody come and play today.
Somebody come and
Be my friend
And watch the sun
Till it rains again.
Somebody come and play today.
Ernie grabs ahold of Bert's arm and starts dancing around the room with him.
Bert: Ack! Ernie! What are you doing?
Ernie:
La la la, la la la.
La la la, la la la la la la.
La la la la, la la la la.
Bert: Ernie! I'm going to - I'm going to drop the groceries! Stop it!
Ernie: (cont'd)
La la la la, la la la la la.
La la la, la la la, la la.
Ernie lets go of Bert. Bert is visibly starting to get into this.
Bert: Well, that... that was kind of fun.
Ernie:
Somebody come with me and
See the pleasure in the wind.
Somebody see the time is getting
Late to begin.
Bert: Oh, yes!
Bert opens his arms out wide, the groceries go flying.
Bert:
(sung)
Somebody come and play!
Somebody come and play today!
Somebody come and
Be my friend
And watch the sun
Till it rains again.
Ernie and Bert:
Somebody come and play today!
Bert: Oh, wow! Oh, boy, that was fun! Ernie, what a good idea. We should play a game. What kind of game did you want to play?
Ernie: Well... Well, gee, Bert, I don't really know. Let me think about it a little, Bert. Hmm. What kind of game to play? I'm gonna go look around Bert. See ya.
Ernie exits.
Bert: Well, I... Oh, well. I guess I'll just put the groceries awa---
Bert sees the mess the groceries left when they flew out of his hands.
Bert: (shouts) Ernie! ! ! !
