Hi,

Thank you for the suggestion. I went to the "main" Hawaii site (if there is one) at www.gohawaii.com and emailed them with the link. Don't know if I'll get a response, though.

I even called up Sesame Workshop today and asked. The lady was very nice, but all she had was the plot summary for the episode.

Just called the visitor's center at the Hawaii site and gave them the name of the mountain, and the lady said "Ummm...I've never heard of that mountain. Let me look it up." And after being on hold, she cruised the net with the name and the only link she found was to the Muppet Wiki site! She said "Um, sir. I found out that this mountain is called 'Mount Snuffleupagus' and it was on 'Sesame Street' with Big Bird and...um...I'll call you back when I find out what island it's on..."

The poor woman! Well, yeah, it was the mountain I was lookin' for, but I didn't expect the Muppet Wiki page to be her first resource! I hate to lead her around by the nose (or should I say 'snuffle') but I'd love to find out where this mountain is. The people there are used to answering questions like 'where's some great places to surf?' or 'can you recommend some affordable hotels in Honolulu?' It's hard to call 'em up and ask "Hey, I wanna go on vacation to Hawaii, so Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Mount Snuffleupagus?"

And Fozzie, thank you very much for sending the email to your friend. I thought that this mountain was the "Sleeping Giant" Mountain near Kapaa, but the more I compare the images, the less sure I am of that. The right sides of the mountain don't look the same.

I read where the Sesame Street gang went to Taos, NM once. If you ever get to go, it's beautiful country out there. I'm not sure if that's where Luis's family was in those eps, but it could be close by.

Someone else to ask...

You know, I'm thinking that there is one more person I could ask about finding this mountain...Carroll Spinney! I'm seriously considering writing him a letter and asking nicely if he remembers where Mt. Snuffleupagus is.

If I write to him, I'll include the "Mt. Snuffleupagus" entry from Muppet Wiki...and maybe a copy of the Hawaii episodes to help jog his memory. (I taped 'em off Noggin).

I'm rattling off the other names in my head as to who went there and who I could write to. Who would know where Mt. Snuffleupagus is?

Bob: might know (but I heard his wife answers his fan mail instead of Bob)

Maria: not sure...(have many people who wrote to her gotten a response?)

Olivia: uhh...I have no idea where to write to her. I recently saw her on a U.S. Cellular commercial, but she hasn't been on the street since the mid 80's...

Jerry Nelson: Now there's someone who would know. However, with Jerry on the verge of permanent retirement from Muppeteering...would he get my letter at Sesame Workshop? I'm a little hesitant about it...

I also thought in Nelson's case, did he go to Hawaii with the rest of the gang, or did he just do a voice over for Snuffy and have other puppeteers perform him on location?

The reason I think of this is that the Hawaii episodes were taped in 1977, just when TMS was going on. Jerry was obviously busy during that time sing:, , etc.) and it would've been tough for him to do on location puppeteering halfway around the world. Does this make sense?

Mount snuffy

I missed the SS Hawaiian ep, back in 77 would have loved to have seen it. I have no idea where that mountain is, but if you ever find out post it. Kind of interesting how BB got the whole SS gang to go to Hawaii searching for a mountain that looked like a creature that as far as they were concerned didn't exist.

But the plot of the Hawaii episodes centered around visiting Buffy and her relatives on an Indian reservation there. During one of the shows, a legend was told around a campfire about a "Mt. Snuffleupagus". The adults (of course) didn't believe it, but Big Bird did! While the adults explored Hawaii and did other things, Big Bird and Snuffy (who arrived via a cargo net from a helicopter) spent their time in Hawaii looking for Mt. Snuffleupagus.
