According to Muppet Wiki it was. In ep 1091, scene 4 it says "Big Bird and the gang board the truck and head out to the Indian reservation where Buffy lives."

They show the teepee a little later in the ep. and mention Mt. Snuffleupagus!

Where the heck is that mountain?...

CJ I wached the special myself so believe me it wasn't on an Indian Reservation. So Wikipeida isn't exactly right with that part.

Perhaps that portion of Wikipedia can be edited then. Been a while since I saw these episodes.:smirk:

I was just going over the visit to Hawaii and viewed the part where Oscar wants to see the lava he's heard about. I can't remember the name of the Volcano there but it's too bad they didn't go to Hawaii in 1971 because that was the last time it euruppted prior to the Hawaii visit.

Getting Closer...

Hi everyone,

I am now certain that the Sesame Street gang visited the island of Kauai for at least a portion of their trip.

How do I know? Well, first of all, it's because of the mountains Big Bird and Snuffy saw while on their search. They found the Sleeping Giant Mountain (Mt. Nounou), King Kong's profile (they said it looked like a gorilla) and right next to it is Mt. Hole in the Mountain. That's what Big Bird called it...and that's what it's actual name is! All of these mountains are found on Kauai. I bought a travel book on Kauai this weekend. It's called "The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook". If you happen to see a copy, check out page 47. Right there on the map it says "King Kong's Profile & Hole in the Mountain". The Sleeping Giant is just west of Kapaa.

Yet...no photos or indication of mountains nearby that look like Snuffy.:smirk:

I did have to chuckle, though, because way west of these mountains is another mountain that has the power to make MCers everywhere mentally respond the same way after reading this mountain's name. Ready? It's called:

Mt. Namahana (do-doo-do-do-do)

Well, as my last resort, I decided to write to Caroll Spinney. My letter went out to him about the first of the year, so we'll see. I made it a handwritten letter, pretty short, and just asking him politely where Mt. Snuffleupagus could be. I don't know how he is about responding to people's letters, but I did read somewhere that he likes to talk about the places he's been. It's a long shot, and he (and Big Bird) get about a bazillion fan letters a week from kids. Still, I figured it's worth a try.

We'll see, I guess. The quest continues.

Are we even sure it's not a fake mountain dropped into the shot?

Jim Henson "Hmmmmm...." impression

Well...

Hmmmmm.....

I don't know. It looks pretty real in the episodes...like an actual mountain. The shadows and stuff...if it is a fake, it was done pretty well! Only Caroll Spinney would know for sure, though. Hopefully, I'll get a response.

I do know for a fact that the other mountains they saw were real.

I wonder if Karen Falk at the JHC Archives would know about this? She knows everything else, it seems. If nothing else, isn't there a way to contact the Sesame Street people via e-mail? I wish they would be more active on the boards--just a matter of us keeping things interesting enough to have them visit.

Karen Falk? Huh. Hadn't thought of that. Maybe she'd know...but is she able to access the Sesame Workshop's archived stuff or is her study limited to just the archives that JHC lets her use? I thought that archived stuff was mostly separated between the companies, with the exception of Jim's original sketches for Oscar, Big Bird, etc.

As for emailing Sesame Workshop, I emailed them with a simpler question a couple months ago (something about their program schedule if I remember right) and I have gotten no response. I did call them (as I mentioned before) to ask about Mt. Snuffy, but got nowhere.

At this point, I'm thinking about just being patient and seeing if Caroll Spinney answers my letter. The trip's not for ages, anyway.

I'm also toying with the idea of writing to Maria. I thought I read on here that she answered fan mail.
