The Home Alone movies (save for the fourth) were definitely favorites of mine; Hughes gave us a LOT of enjoyable movies, did he not?

This is really sad.

2009 sucks! We're losing everybody!

This is so sad. I really did like John Hughes' movies. I really did enjoy The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Nalt. Lampoon's Vacation, and as 'Snowth mentioned, the Home Alone movies (the first two to be exact).

Oh I loved his movies! The Breakfast Club is a definite favorite of mine and Home Alone is one of my Christmas staples. This is very sad indeed. He perfected the "coming of age" type movie.

He wrote and produced the Home Alone movies, but Chris Colombus directed them... well, the first two anyway... but Hughes did write and produce the original three.

You know I can watch Home Alone today and it's still funny and still so incredibly heart felt. I'd urge anyone to listen to the commentary on the DVD, they talk all about how unusual the film was for its time. Back then, it was very rare to have a kid carry a whole film virtually on his own. And apparently the adult actors were very skeptical as they were filming, convinced the movie would flop. Of course when Home Alone was a gigantic hit, they were quite happy to come back for Home Alone II!

Also interesting was how in the original story concept, there was no subplot about Kevin befriending the old man. It was mainly all about the jokes and violence against the burglers and the last scene of the film was just going to be Kevin saying, "Just hung around!"

But adding in the moments where Kevin begins to miss his family and winds up in Church and bonds with Marley really elevates the film from a sort of silly cartoon short to a full fledged Christmas movie that talks about facing your fears and appreciating your family.
